Cheery Alex Fletcher lives comfortably in Manhattan off the residuals from his 80's pop success and reprising his hits at school reunions, theme parks, and state fairs. But those gigs are declining, so he jumps at the chance to write a song and record it with reigning teen idol Cora Corman. Trouble is, he's good at melodies but needs a lyricist and has less than a week to finish. Enter Sophie Fisher, subbing for a friend who waters Alex's plants... (imdb)

That's right. I watched a Hugh Grant rom com. I'm not ashamed to admit it. And what's more, I'll kick anyone's ass who has a problem with that. That is, if I weren't worried about ruining my manicure.

Loved the references to 80's bands and the comparison to the dancing pop "singers" of today. I thought the movie would be a drag, but Grant and Barrymore actually do a nice job at it.

Everything about it works so pedestrian, you'd think the movie was manufactured by computer as a compilation of textbook romantic-comedy data. So maybe it's not all bad, but at the same time there's no life to it. The opening 80's music video is the only point of interest.

Only watched because too drunk to go to bed. Tedious romcom boilerplate with HG nowhere near good enough to hide his apparent dislike -and lack of attraction- for Barrymore.

Barrymore and Grant are charming people and there's nothing inherently wrong with the movie that doesn't plague a thousand other films but its too boring for them to save.

The first hour flows nicely through a tale of two new friends writing a song together, and is genuinely fun to watch. The characters are likeable, the score overly cheesy but in a good way, and the comedy amusing. When their song writing is done, the film also seems ready to finish. Sadly, it does not. What follows is roughly an hour of typical romcom affairs which left me maddeningly disappointed. This could have been a triumph for the genre. Such a shame.

This movie is entertaining, funny, and sweet. The music is what makes it special because it engages the viewer into the story. Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore have good chemistry which make the romantic plot line enjoyable. Finally, the semi-spoof on the 80's bands is great comedy.

I adore this movie a lot because I love music with such passion. I just didn't care too much of Cora's charecter too much. It's worse than seeing Brittney Spears in a sense, but the rest of movie about love and music, just ate my up. Drew Berrymoore is my now favorite female actress and she sure shines in this movie as well as hugh grant singing performances. Anyone else stuck in the 80s besides me??

This movie is so funny! There's some problems with it - the characters have great histories, but we don't seem to get the whole story - but otherwise it's such fun! It's actually very sweet and there is a moral to it as well. If nothing else, the music video is worth seeing!:D

Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore are a good team (they would've been in the 30s Hollywood, too), and the 80 music video parody is spot on. They even bother to make the contemporary songs sound right. I just didn't give a crap about the tired story of two people who have to move on from their past to engage the present. Not only was it unoriginal, but it was cloyingly tied to the songwriting in a gag-inducing finale.

Pop went my heart! "Music and Lyrics" has everything you want from a romantic comedy! I loved that there was the awkward morning-after scene, that's rare in romantic movies (mostly it's just happily ever after). And though the whole Cora carracter was supposed to be a parody for all the Britneys we've got out there today, I think she was more of an accurate discription than a joke.

Any movie that skewers 80's pop music so effectively can't be all bad. As it turns out, though, it can come surprisingly close. You'd have to scour the annals of cinema history thoroughly to find another example of two notable actors so completely disengaged from the material they're working with as Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore are here. Despite its setting in the world of entertainment, the film is an utterly generic romantic comedy. The leads are just operating accordingly.

Typical cheeky fare from Hugh Grant. Decent little date flick, but nothing to write home about. Harmless flick that benefits from Drew Barrymore's casting, but really is so vanilla that any other actress could have done the role. No one will remember this movie ten years from now.

This movie is hilarious. After I told my friend that I watched it, the 'Pop! Goes my Heart' sorta became the inside joke of the year. And though the plot is a bit thin, and the acting is pretty awful at times, it scores points for the dance moves and 'Pop! Goes My Heart'.
