Musuko no seishun

It's kind of the Japanese Leave it to Beaver - everyone is SO wholesome. It's nice-looking and moves very fast, but the kids are so old that the whole thing has a sort of creepy Peter Pan vibe. At one point a father wonders whether his 18 year old son is old enough to think about girls.

A fun, sweet, light little drama that had me smiling through most of its short runtime.

The first directorial job for Masaki Kobayashi. And it's a brief 45-minute story of teenage sons doing teenage stuff. Adorably innocent, of course. So silly and sweet. I liked it.

It looks nice, and Chishu Ryu's cameo is nice. There's a lot of interesting things going on, such as the western influence (coming right off the heels of the occupation) in song. Whimsical and corny, with a forced message tacked on at the film's conclusion. It illustrates a lot of problems I have with Kobayashi in general.
