Charming. Gérard Depardieu is great in this little French film, but highest praise should be given to Gisèle Casadesus, 96 (!) at the time of filming, who manages to do a convincing and reasonable performance. Depardieu seemed to be inspired by her dedication and thus he appeared to be playing with more heart than in some of his more recent films that I have seen. Underdeveloped in many areas, but still very enjoyable.

I love movies about friendship. I love literature. I love Gérard Depardieu. What's not to love about this?

It's alright but no classic - just another sensitive French drama made with some quality but ultimately a bit impactless. Dépardieu is good as usual but not really challenged by this basic role. There are some mildly interesting supporting characters but the film's main relationship never reaches the emotional connection of a duo like, say, Les Intouchables (perhaps not a fair comparison). The illiteracy angle is a bit hackneyed but this is balanced out by some touching moments. Watchable.

It's quite wide-eyed about literacy and literature, but the first hour is so charming and fun and entertaining that I was going to give it a full 4. Sadly, the final act is not good at all.

Cute idea, but it just misses something. And I don't know what

"This sentimental tale of a barely literate man's awakening at the hands of an elderly bibliophile is generally as painless as it is hackneyed." - Bill Weber

The movie is very charming and short. It takes a very simple story and the journey that it takes you through is about friendship. It is a very entertaining movie.

The story was a bit too shallow but gerard depardieu and the lovely old lady make it worth watching..overall it's a nice uplifting movie.
