'My Ain Folk' is the second of three autobiographical films written and directed by Bill Douglas, recounting his childhood and adolescence. In all three films, the protagonist is cried Jamie. The name change warns us that some fictionalisation is in the works, but we're never told precisely at which points in the story, nor how extensively. The most famous case of this sort of substitution would be the example of Francois Truffaut and his cinematic alter ego Antoine Doinel. (imdb)

A solid continuation of My Childhood, featuring most of what made that film great, including even more beautiful cinematography (as well as a better restoration job). However, I like this less because of how disparate some scenes are to each other -- the unrelaxed editing here give the impression Douglas filmed enough to make a feature film and I'm sure this would've benefited from being lengthier.

A comment a friend said that I rather like; "A kind of painful love surrounds even some of the most unlikeable of characters."

The opening full color shot from the Lassie film is striking and a sign that this will be a little different than My Childhood, but it still has a similar feel and general depressive quality. The various relationships between the characters can get confusing but I'd say that was purposeful.
