1997
Romance, Comedy
1h 45m
Best friends since college, Jules (Roberts) and Michael (Mulroney) made a pact that if neither had found someone to love by the age of 28, they would marry each other. Now it's their 28th year of life, and Michael just popped the question. There's only one problem: he popped it to someone else. (Sony Pictures Entertainment)

Watch only if there's a better-than-average chance of nookie afterward.

I like the idea for the film far more than I like the end result. The aggressively likable Roberts is (intentionally) miscast as Jules, Mulroney's character is not dreamy enough to be the center of a love triangle, and the tone is just too light and fluffy to do justice to the concept. But, man, what a concept. A romantic comedy where the protagonist is the villain and she knows it... and so do the filmmakers. This level of self awareness is rare in the genre and I kind of love it for that.

Jules (Julia Roberts) and Michael (Mulroney) have been flirting on the lines of best friends since their short-lived love affair in college. They proposed that if neither of them had found a loved one by the time they were 28, they would marry each other. Nearing Jules's 28th birthday, Michael finally gets up the courage to propose; only he proposes to another woman. (Sony Pictures Entertainment)

Honestly it's pretty standard romantic comedy fare. It's got some laughs but hardly enough to keep someone that doesn't like the genre entertained. It plays like a pretty standard rom-com, except for the ending which is really the only thing that sticks out for me. Ultimately I didn't care for the film because I didn't care for the best friend, the groom or the bride. Props to Julia Roberts for having the gusto to play a person who's genuinely dislikable at times.

Pretty enjoyable romantic comedy thanks to the way it plays with conventions of the genre and Rupert Everett's scene stealing.
