Has an effective blue-collar mining town atmosphere, and the kills are pretty good (at least in the uncut version). Not a classic by any means, but you could do worse if you're in the mood for the special charms only an early '80s slasher can provide.

Nova Scotian Giallo. The mine might be the backbone of Valentine Bluffs but icy cold Moosehead is the blood bubbling through her veins.

A bunch of drunken Canuckleheads and their screeching girlfriends end up trapped down a mineshaft with a psychotic pickaxe-wielding serial killer. Features several random and endless scenes of partying that exist solely to prominently feature the product placement of Moosehead beer. Nothing special but offers up several gory treats if you get hold of the uncut version.

It's the love triangle that really sells this movie about people getting hacked to pieces. Ah, yes, a hopeless romantic.

I felt like this was better then a lot of slasher flicks that were coming out at the time It did have somewhat of a plot and the effects were good Favorite scare old lady popping out of the dryer it was the best kill of the film "Grossly Cool" !

I think the version I saw was probably cut, as there seemed to be some gore missing. However, all the scenes featuring wacky Canadian shenanigans were left intact. Ludicrous premise and dull characters, even for a slasher. Who the hell cares about a dance? How old are these people meant to be? It has its charms (the guy with the moustache, mainly) but there were more effective examples of the genre available at the time.

Set 'em up, knock 'em down. We've all seen it before, but this one is still pretty interesting. You don't see many Canadian slasher flicks. I feel like if Michael Myers was born in Canada he'd be a succesful car salesman instead of an immortal pagan spree killer.

Only in an 80s mining town is a chunky bespectacled white boy with a jaunty mustache a respected authority figure. That said, the film has some level of authenticity that makes it anthropologically fascinating.

It's sad, but relevent, to point out that even early in the life of the sub-genre, the movies that were reletively unsuccessful are still better than the bulk of the junk thrown at us today. Mind you, I'm not saying it's a masterpiece or anything, but I really think that the genre could have tried to improve the format over the past thirty years. Worth a watch if you're a fan of horror, but not exactly an over-stimulating piece of horror history.

Moosehead and Keith's? You're watching the East Coast of Canada, baby. I like that after Halloween, every holiday needed to get its own slasher.

Under Quarantine Film Reviews #74: A very underwhelming slasher from the golden age, complete with a dull plot and uninteresting characters. The kills were pretty gory but too few in between.

This was the Mooseheadiest movie I've ever seen. Decent little slasher with it's major drawback being a group of completely flat and boring characters.

A frustrating slasher which obviously has a bigger budget than most of it's peers, and an interesting setting in it's small mining town and mines. The killer with his mining gear is impressive as well. The whole thing reminds me of The Prowler, another slasher from '81. However, It's too low on gore for my liking with many kills taking place off-screen, and with characters who are not that interesting.

Ahh yes, this reminds me of why I have a love for slashers. I had a great time with this one. Don't get me wrong, it's not a great movie. It's got bad actors, bad dialogue, bad direction, bad editing, all of that. But as a slasher, I thought it was pretty fun. I liked the setting, and there were some cool and memorable death scenes. Recommended if you like this sort of thing.

One of the best killer fits. Dug the shot on location, in a small mining town with local kids, choice. Makes the world feel real and lived in. Loved the use of the mines as a claustrophobic, inescapable place. The use of pastel and red when not in the mine contrasted with the darkness of the mine makes it all pop pretty well. Justice for Harry Warden, the working class hero. Taking out the people that danced over his head while him and his fellow workers were trapped in the mines below.

Slasher fans could do worse than M.B.V, which is at least distinguished by the realism of its mining town setting. Claims have been made for its supposed greatness and influence in some quarters, but it was really just a Canuck cash-in on a growing genre trend. The reveal is kind of dumb, but the killer in a mining suit is novel, and Mihalka builds claustrophobic tension in the finale in a mine shaft where young people scramble to survive. The tension elsewhere is comparably diffuse.

Well made (especially considering it was made in early 80s) slasher flick that will entertain anyone who is a fan of the genre. The locations and direction are good and truly add suspense. There are some memorable gruesome deaths.

Never really deviates from the formula, but how many slashers really do? What really sets slashers apart from each other is their settings, characters, and special effects. MBV is strong in all three areas, making it a classic of the genre.

Actually pretty above average for an 80s horror flick for most of its runtime with its mineshaft settings and some funny lines and ok actors. Final twist was a little bit lame though, and no nudity.

This early-era slasher has earned a hefty reputation since its release, & there's a reason why- featuring some gore-tastic & creative deaths as well as likeable- if mostly one-note-characters and an enjoyable setting, it's memorable for a few reasons and still largely holds up as a serviceable slasher. However, it has a number of storytelling problems which, on top of a ridiculous twist ending, bog it down quite a bit. All in all, essential horror viewing, but nothing spectacular.
