My Cousin Rachel

A moderate improvement on the 1952 adaptation, but still feels the need to overcompensate for its cinematic presentation by tweaking plot points and injecting added drama were none is needed. Nearly all the problems here are created by unneeded changes to the novel. Sam Claflin gives an unconvincing performance, sometimes overacting to the point of hilarity. Rachel Weisz, on the other hand, fits her part like a glove and does very well with what she's given.

Entertainment: 4/4... beautifully shot. Spirituality: 0.5/3. Sustainability: 0/3.

The ending was a huge disappointment. The pace of the movie is generally slow, and I may have just missed the *why* Sam Claflin's character became so spellbound by Rachel. The chemistry didn't feel real to me.

Acting was generally good. The story was nuanced and subtle but weak. Direction seemed uninspired. It tried my patience to the end and ended without resolution. The role of Philip was poorly handled or poorly written as his actions and motivations were often perplexing. The plot relied too heavily on subtle details and ultimately failed to satisfy.
