So maybe this light-weight little picture works slightly better as a courtroom drama than as a comedy, but either way it's the game performances that sell it.

Pesci was fresh off Goodfellas in this tailor made role as an inexperienced middle aged lawyer who must defend his cousin against false murder charges. He isn't flexing his acting muscle, but he is effortlessly charming and proves that he is more than capable of being a leading man. Tomei is equally strong as his sassy, sexy and street smart girlfriend with surprising talents. It's thoroughly predictable, but it's fun watching Pesci slowly win over a skeptical judge played memorably by Gwynne.

I understand it's perfectly acceptable to mock and stereotype the South but, to be fair, the North gave us Joe Pesci. So there.

Likable understated Deep South courtroom comedy that is fairly light on traditional comedic punchlines but has character and charm. Slow start but strong second half with accurate courtroom procedure. Pesci is great but Fred Gwynne actually stood out to me the most. Poor Ralph Macchio is mostly just an extra for the last hour though!

I love this movie with a passion. it's a comedy that doesn't try to be a comedy as we know it today. and that's why it works so well. (of course, when you're starring Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei, you better not be trying to make a comedy!) but in all honesty, those 2 actors are what make the film. and if f-bombs spoken through a Brooklyn accent pleasure your eardrums then this is the movie for you.

A funny tale of two yutes that get... "Excuse me, two whats?" Two yutes! "What is a yute?" Come on, this is a classic. So much charisma, so much comedy, so little time. This is just about as good as it can get. So, who wants grits?

A really odd film that feels stitched together. Like, Pesci, Tomei, and Gwynne are both great, but the film around them just ambles along. Supposedly, Pesci had a ton of make-up done to make him look younger, but he looks ghoulish. I did like that he took his daughter with him...wait? that was his fiancee?

watched this while dog-sitting at someone's house on a Saturday afternoon and yeah that's about right. it's not bad, but it's missing any sort of panache that would elevate it into something more than a rote exercise in making your grandma "glad she watched it." congrats to Tomei for winning an Oscar for one scene.

The events that animate the plot emerge exclusively from rote courtroom drama formula, but it's only because the script gives its characters priority. The humor relies on stereotypes and fish-out-of-water tropes, but Pesci and Tomei both play (somewhat) against type, which is almost solely responsible for the movie's charm. As a courtroom drama or as a character-based romantic comedy, it's competent and familiar, but as a movie that seamlessly blends the two, it's surprisingly effective.

Painful at the outset with a textbook Idiot Plot, prison rape jokes, and boring slobs-vs-snobs conflicts. But eventually it does develop into something witty, engaging, and good-natured. Good job by Marisa Tomei and the perpetually sour-faced Pesci. *Extremely* '90s; can you say "driving montage set to blues rock"?

I don't know why I love this movie so much.I saw this a long time ago, when I did not know the difference between 'story' and 'script' and invariably kept my brain shut and was not exposed to 'world cinema' blah blah...There is something very sincere and naive about this movie that tugs at my heart. It will always be a sweet, little, perfect movie I can watch again and again and recommend to everyone. Fun and Funny from beginning to end. Marisa is The Bomb, ably supported by Joe & everyone else.

Judging from his performance in this film Joe Pesci really can't do comedy well. The few scenes where he is supposed to be intentional funny falls flat .What makes this film work despite that is most of the time the situations his character is in that are funny is because he plays it pretty straight and let's the absurdity of what is happening be the joke. The most entertaining parts of the film were the courtroom scenes, particularly the scenes with the judge.

2024 is my first viewing, so I have no nostalgia for this viewing. It's dumb. Other than Joe Pesci & Marisa Tomei it's utterly unwatchable. Which is weird because they are mesmorizing. And why, over the past 30 years, I've seen all their scenes as clips. The clips are 65/100, but this stanker is 2 hours long! That said. I've watched it, and I'm likely going to forget that I watched it. No one need ever watch this movie... Other than the clips.

This is a masterclass in how to write character. The screenplay could very easily be filled with stereotypes and bad jokes, but instead it plays around with expected identities, and the jokes end up being rather witty and clever. The acting from Pesci and Tomei is very much on point. In fact its not surprising Tomei won an Oscar as she does a lot to elevate her character. Yes the premise is a bit ridiculous and some might find it dated, but I think those criticisms can be very easily overlooked.

Sweet natured and perfectly competent little comedy would have been even better with half an hour of build-up cut out, and with more of a focus on Pesci and Tomei as fully realised characters - the labored "who's on first?" routines which open the film are unbelievably dumb, and threaten to derail things before they get started. The last half, when our dynamic duo really come to the fore, is the highlight, with expertly droll comic support from Gwynne.

Vinny (Joe Pesci), an extremely green Brooklyn lawyer, must defend his young cousin and his friend from murder charges in a small Alabama town. Vinny's ineptitude stretches belief at times, and it takes rather a while to get going, but it's quite a funny and likable (and apparently legalistically accurate) little trifle regardless, with good work from Pesci, Fred Gwynne as a sepulchral judge, and Marisa Tomei (who won an Oscar) as Pesci's car-savvy girlfriend.

Criminally underrated. Pesci absolutely shines. He is a one-man wrecking crew in this film. It feels like it could have been made in the 40s. It has a feel of Chapin and also Steve Martin in both its narrative lucidity but also its inherent chaos. Mona Lisa Vito won an Oscar for her role. Although i usually don't reference the Oscars as evidence of the quality of a film, it is highly unusual for a comedic performance to win an oscar so that tells you something. Hilarious film.

Joe Pesci is great in this. He gives his usual heated performance and is just hilarious. Another great performance comes from Fred Gwynne, who is most known for his role in "The Munsters" as Herman Munster. He plays a very straight and to the point judge, which contrasts wonderfully with Vinny's unprofessional attitude. Marisa Tomei is another actor in this film that should not be overlooked. She plays Vinny's girlfriend; she is smart, sassy, very funny, and sexy.
