Sparkling musical comedy, flawlessly marrying the words of Shaw with the lyrics of Lerner & Loewe, and beautifully opened up for the screen by director Cukor. Hepburn, Holloway and the supporting cast are all terrific, but Harrison's career-defining performance steals the show, providing the ultimate Higgins portrayal. Toe-tapping score features not one misfired number. Above all else, terrific fun.

One of my favorite classic movie musicals. Famed singing-voice-dubber Marni Nixon does a great job of matching Audrey Hepburn's voice in both Cockney and proper British, and Rex Harrison is hysterical as the comically misogynistic Henry Higgins. Likable songs, hilarious script, and amazing chemistry. The only part I really don't like is the standard "On the Street Where You Live," which is trite beyond triteness (and yes, I realize that's the point, but that doesn't mean I have to like it).

Some truly memorable songs sugarcoat a love story so horrid it single-handedly delayed my marriage by three years. The defining moment of love is: I've grown accustomed to her face. You could argue that he was simply too proud to admit his deeper feelings, but I think his character is sufficiently in tune with being imbued merely by his training of her. She'll make a great pupil of a wife I suppose. That said, I'm not above admitting I've put "I Could Have Danced All Night" on a mix disc.

It's a great story and the talent in this is undeniable. Hepburn's visual transformation is quite remarkable, and while I think Harrison's Higgins is a bit too insensitive he did a good job. The best part, however, is Stanley Holloway stealing every scene he's in and doing some great numbers. The songs, sets and costumes are quite good too. It's still not the masterpiece that the 1938 Pygmalion is, and there are more than a few scenes which are way too long.

Painful padding, terribly obvious "stretch out the plot point for three minutes" songs, and one of the most insultingly disrespectful changes to an ending ever - especially because it misses the point of one of the most awesome platonic love stories ever.

The costumes are sumptuous, the dialogue and songs sparkling with wit & satire. Rex Harrison's biting sarcasm is amusing, & the young Jeremy Brett is charming. But much as I love Audrey Hepburn, it's impossible to believe her as a poverty stricken Cockney. She betrays her origins as a lady born to elegance & wealth. Rex Harrison has absolutely no chemistry with her. But who can believe that misogynist would ever fall for any woman? Never mind, shut your eyes & just enjoy it as a musical.

Ah, what a wonderful movie! Of course I liked this! I'm such a sucker for musicals. I knew a lot of the songs from various other places and they were all enjoyable. Hepburn was so beautiful and charming. At almost 3 hours, it was quite a long film but none of it felt unnecessary. It played out very much like a stage show. Whether you'd enjoy it depends very much on whether you like musicals or not. I enjoyed it a lot.

This movie is a classic. Bringing the musical My Fair Lady to the big screen it is done superbly with great performances from the leads. Not being a big fan of musicals I still enjoyed this one as the story is powerful enough to hold the whole thing together with the music and songs being much an integral part of it. It is a hilarious and heart-warming movie with a feel-good vibe which should leave the viewer thoroughly satisfied.

the chief characteristic of a good musical is memorable music, this has that. aside from that, a good musical must have all the makings of a good movie as well, the production values are great, and it's an all around great movie. so i'd say watch this movie weather you like musicals or not, hepburn is beautiful as ever and harrison does a great job, i'd give it a higher score if hepburn's accent in the beginning weren't so horrendous.

Hepburn's initial portrayal of Eliza as infantile and childish comes across almost as fetishistic, as if "training" this girl is equivalent to her reaching womanhood. The intermission then shifts focus to a trite and by-the-numbers romance, albeit with some lavish costuming and set decoration. The songs are terrible for the most part, but Harrison is fine whenever he's not talk-singing. Perfectly represents the stagnated, dying era of Hollywood in the wake of a cultural revolution.

The movie is so good is in so many ways (costumes, dialogue, story, music, art direction, etc.) that it's shortcomings bother me all the more. First of all, Harrison, while great, is too old for Higgins by about ten to fifteen years. Also, I hate to be curmudgeonly, but Hepburn is not a convincing Cockney. Beyond that though, i had a good time.

Audrey Hepburn is tremendous as Eliza, in both of her roles. She's incredibly likable, perhaps even more so as her initial role. There's a lot of humor here, particularly through the conflict between the two leads. Some of the latter songs are too long and not that great, but there are many good ones. The ending needed work.

Too long and doesn't need it, the musical part is fine, specially some songs, and the story about the flower girl becaming a lady is right too. About the "romantic" (if this can be called like that seriously) is awful, forced for nothing and quite difficult to understand all those changes in the characters in such a short time, not treated in all the movie but just the last half hour (being a 2.45h movie), quick and bad.

Another rags-to-riches musical that stars an not-entirely-convincing "guttersnipe" in Hepburn (we really need to bring that word back into circulation) being tutored by a cantankerous Harrison. There are some very funny parts, but it comes from a different time when the ending wasn't as discordant as it seems now.

It's decently acted and directed, and the music is mostly charming–barring a couple of numbers that could've been entirely deleted without changing anything–but hanging everything on an undercooked "romance" (not even sure if that was the conclusion) brings it somewhat down. Also, can't deny that I'd have liked it a bit more had the movie stopped a couple of minutes earlier.

One of my favorite Audrey Hepburn movies. She is a poor girl in London with a thick street accent, wanting to improve her speech so she can get a better job. She jumps from the gutter to the court in one whirlwind makeover. She is absolutely marvelous, and most of these points are for her. Others are adequate, but I disliked some of the singing that was in place of dialog. A must see for Audrey Hepburn fans and otherwise moderately amusing.

Okay after seeing this I can understand the contemporary pop appeal of Audrey Hepburn. I have a short attention span for musicals, but managed to keep my interest through the whole three hour span. But the problem I encounter here, as with all musicals, is that so many of the setpiece songs seemingly exist only stretch the film longer. And at 3 hours that just seemed obligatory.

It looks gorgeous. It stars Rex Harrison and Audrey Hebpurn. It's otherwise very uninteresting. The characters are flat. It has very little plot, considering the runtime. It wastes a lot of time with mundayne, boring musical numbers, generally tends to focus heavily on the least interesting parts of the story and takes forever to get to the fucking point. I don't know if I've ever seen a (so-called) romantic movie make less of an effort to be romantic.

My two main problems with this film are that a) there is no lead-up to Eliza falling in love; she dances with him for a minute or two and inexplicably falls for him, despite the way he's treated her thus far; and b) I don't understand why she would go back to him, based on (again) the way he's treated her, as well as his mysoginistic views. Despite this, it's a fun, effective film, and Harrison manages to be delightful in a rather loathsome role.
