Baby photographer Ronnie Jackson, on death row in San Quentin, tells reporters how he got there: taking care of his private-eye neighbor's office, Ronnie is asked by the irresistible Baroness Montay to find the missing Baron. There follow confusing but sinister doings in a gloomy mansion and a private sanatorium, with every plot twist a parody of thriller cliches. What are the villains really after? Hope shines so brightly in this movie it's almost unbelievable, he's got some of the wittiest jokes that could get anyone to at least smile. The story is pretty average, but the script here is simply genius.

Fun noir spoof but a lot of jokes flew over my head. Dorothy Lamour is intoxicating. Fun premise. Fav scene: going to the apartment with all the women expecting John.

Bob Hope surrounded by all types of dubious Hollywood characters resulting him being on death row telling the story of his downfall. Yeah, pretty hilarious stumbling across the likes of Peter Lorre, Lon Chaney Jr and other not-so-desirable people. Exactly the type of dry and jumpy comedy Hope specialized in. Absolutely a delight!

Fairly enjoyable noir parody-not much of a story but a witty script, many of it coming as narration of the protagonists story.

There are so many throwaway line jokes in this movie that some of them have to hit, even watching this 75 years after it was released. It's funny, but a bit laborious to get through at times. I think it could have played a bit more into the spoof part of the film.

Hilarious noir parody that is better than many straight noir films. Hope is in fine form, even if some of his gags have not aged well, with Lamour an excellent straight woman for Hope's funny man. Lorre's menacing character in this film is far more convincing than his role in 'The Maltese Falcon'.

Didn't enjoy Hope's farcical character, as he was overtly childish and too many of the jokes weren't funny. The movie has its moments; a watchable film noir parody.

Bob Hope's name preceded him. I'd heard of his shows for soldiers; I'd heard his political thoughts; I'd heard about his longevity. But I hadn't watched one of his films. I think I presumed he'd be like Abbott and Costello. I acknowledge their importance; I don't mind them, but they just don't connect with me. So colour me shocked that I enjoyed this Hope-vehicle. Its film noir jokes amused me, and its convoluted plot entertained me.
