My Life as a Dog

Very nice look at growing up through a character undergoing some tumultuous changes in his family life. At times it's too quirky and the lead isn't the most likable but the film's disarming mix of comedy and sincerity make it work anyway and it has some really great moments.

Excellent film.

I was unsure if the lack of parenting was because this was set in 1959 or if it was a Swedish thing. A barn where all the kids gather to watch other kids box??

Extremely well done and deftly handled film about childhood/coming of age and so much more. A lot of my exposure to Swedish film has been through Bergman and a couple of silents, so it was good to see something completely different. Great central performance by Glanzelius in one of his only film roles. Feels sincere. Not particularly funny, but it works very well.

The eccentric characters in the town of Ingemar's uncle are skillfully interspersed to ease some heavy subject matter. Yet the humor doesn't detract or belittle the seriousness or difficulty of Ingemar's situation. "Best roof in Småland!"

Based on excellent novel from Reidar Jönsson. Filmmakers have done excellent job to adapt this book to big screens. It was also candidate for Oscars and won some other awards. Enough said, brilliant movie.

Rewatching in May 2018 after thirty years, this is still an amusing and affecting coming of age tale, with a general avoidance of schmaltz, excellent performances by Glanzelius and Kinnaman, and thematic concerns that are to some extent unusual and interesting.

Nice movie, good work by Lasse Hallström, beautiful pictures, great story. Also, a nice depicition of the people living in the region of Smaland/Sweden.
