Although his unique story is surprisingly universal. After his mother's sudden death Courgette is befriended by a police officer Raymond, who accompanies him to his new foster home filled with other orphans his age.At first he struggles to find his place in this strange at times, hostile environment. Yet with Raymond's help and his new found friends Courgette eventually learns to trust, finds true love and at last a new family of his own. (imdb)

For a movie that presents the dark side of life for certain kids, the ending strikes me as extreme wishful thinking. Children may be resilient, but these kids seem well adjusted beyond anyone's imagination. I think this movie does a good job of presenting life in a children's home and presenting plausible scenarios for why the kids are there. That is why the ending sticks out badly.

Very simplistic story, slow-moving and shallow, and one of the ugliest protagonists I've seen in a while.

A touching animated tale which starts off sombre, takes a couple of brutal twists and turns, before beginning a steady journey back towards normality and happiness. Along the way, our quirky hero(es) learn about life, relationships and loyalty. It's all pretty cute, sometimes in a beautifully poetic way and sometimes a banal way. The characters do stick in your mind and the animation and model making is absolutely top-class, even if the film's narrative arc perhaps isn't the best. A keeper.

I would equate it's tone to something like Hunt for the Wilderpeople, (i.e., pleasant) despite the subject matter which is pretty heavy for something clearly aimed at children. It's not so much saccharine though because despite the short runtime the characters had enough depth and were allowed to struggle. I don't know if it will get my kid into Celebrity Death Match or not, but that probably wasn't their intention anyways.

Strangely attaching for such a short movie. It's just so damn sweet. The theme is harsh, dark and realistic, but it makes you smile a lot.

Irresistibly animated and with very welcome darkness (it's basically a film about a boy killing his alcoholic mum in G-rated packaging). The bare storyline can seem either poignant or meager depending on the day.

A quirky indie narrative structure applied to a children's film, simplified as appropriate (though perhaps too much), and shown with an art style that I find really offputting. I like the premise and there's a decent mix of whimsy and brutal reality in the characterizations that sets up something interesting, but it's content to simply show, rather than explore, these characters and quickly moves into a few forgettable mini-adventures and a sudden conclusion that is handled clumsily.

It deals with its young traumatized characters in a very humane understanding way, while never becoming too grim or heavy.

Great! Hey movies, check it out, you can actually just be as long as your story is and not pad your shit out to 90 minutes unnecessarily. An example to be followed.

Colourful, original and heartfelt with dark themes running through that will resonate many kids (and adults) but still holds hope.

The ending felt too much like something out of Hollywood, which is a shame since up until then, this movie had been anything but. Deals with heavy subjects without shying away and gains extra points for having the guts to actually dare to show an orphanage which is not totally horrible.

Anguished, heartbreaking, boundless, arty, didactic, all at the same time. Can this really only be made by the French? I guess so.

Visually this film is very creative, and whoever worked on the sound did a superb job. Unfortunately all of quirky stylistic aspects can only do so much to mask the slow pace and overly simplistic story. Have to give it credit for how it handled such dark themes given that it's a kids movie, but as an adult I wanted more.

English dub - Small scale and intensely focused portrait of "Zucchini" overcomes its basically familiar coming of age arc due to its heartfelt and moving ponderances on familial loss and rejection, and its humanistic observances of the walls this can form within a group of people. Good work by the English voice cast, with Offerman (sounding very Nicolas Cage-ish) a particular delight.

Really good at taking dark subject matters and viewing them through a child's perspective, whilst respecting the children's curiosity for even the darker aspects of life. This is certainly helped by the excellent and expressive claymation design. For quite a short film, it could've done with being a little more established at the end, not to mention have a little less of a convenient resolution (which is spoiled right there in the Summary), but it still manages to reach Pixar levels of feels

Wonderful film, even if the animation style takes some getting used to (I definitely found it creepy at the beginning). It's full of so much empathy and kindness and optimism that it's impossible not to be charmed. I don't think I'll watch it again though. I ugly-cried so much that my wife got worried.

A short & sweet animated feature that packs a lot into its runtime. Well-realized characters with lots of personality, a heartwarming narrative, & a fantastic grip on balancing tough topics like abuse (possibly even sexual) with a more lighthearted tone children can still connect with. Having seen the English dub, I really enjoyed the voice acting, but would like to rewatch it for the performances of the French child actors who originally voiced the orphans. All around, highly recommended.

This is a really well made film. The script is excellent and the voice work by the actors are great. Overall I would highly recommend this film.

Very likeable characters with very simple story. It was not clear who the main character was even if the movie is named with "Courgette". Also, it could have been longer in runtime. I felt like, this story has a potential to tell bigger and deeper story. Anyway ending song was my favourite.

Toned down and timeless. A gentle film about sorrow. Almost too gentle. Loved the animation style and it was a cute little story. Just wish they'd made more out of it.

While nicely told, I struggled with my expectations of the movie. I didn't expect something that felt more like a documentary than the progression of characters in a story. Not to mention the subject matter (and the story) are a lot darker than what was expected from the marketing materials (posters, trailers).

Charming, but not particularly original, and the animation borders on creepy. Orphans are a little cliche, but one cannot argue with the emotional effectiveness of seeing one find a home.

this kind of animation seems to disproportionately argue for itself that it should be able to get away with what in other formats are cliches. But really that is what is the case, notwithstanding that there are some low-key, touching moments.

Annesiyle tek başına yaşayan Courgette, şiddete uğramaya başlayınca, dayaktan kaçmaya çalışırken annesi ölür. 9 yaşında olan Courgette, yetimhaneye düşer. Bildiğimiz Türk filmleri konusuyla ilerleyen film, öksüz çocukların iç dünyasını çok iyi anlatmış. Bu arada animasyon çizimleri çok iyi. Gözlerimiz güzelliğe doydu. Filmin sonunda, Camille ve Kabakçık yuva buluyor. Bazen de çocuklar, ailelerini bırakırlar.

I did like the story, script and characters (note: that does definitely not apply to the character design!), but I continue to be unconvinced that stop-motion animation needs to exist as an art form.
