My Sassy Girl

A sweet, nice film of a crazy, somewhat distructive girl and the relationship with her. This film's low imdb rating is a result of a korean flashmob of hate for any US remake.

Having seen both this and the Korean original, I don't get how one is regarded as so much better than the other. The American version may have lacked the same sweetness and mild comedy but had a way better structure and seemed to hold together a lot better as a cohesive story than the Korean version.

Seeing this after the Korean movie makes you realize why movies from another language should never be remade. When I saw the Korean movie, it felt fresh and I found it entertaining. This movie on the other hand was extremely disappointing, I am sure people who havent seen the original movie would like this. The acting my bother lead actors Jesse Bradford and Elisha Cuthbert is beyond terrible. Enough said, watch the original and not this would be my recommendation.

This film ticks one box by updating the Korean version in a way that makes the characters more appealing and more understandable to Western audiences. However it also illustrates all that is wrong with remakes, diluting the powerful emotional content of its predecessor and removing all the quirky charm which made that film quite unique and memorable. The result is a pretty bland and generic romance, which looks and sounds nice enough at times, but fails badly on a dramatic or emotional level.

The acting is quirky but mostly cute. Elisha Cuthbert is crazy gorgeous but her character is very improbable. Jesse Bradford was mostly enjoyable. However, the writing was frequently ridiculous and sometimes tedious. Much of this was entirely unconvincing. Barely worth watching unless you can overlook the idiotic plot and dialog and weird dream sequences. A few cute scenes sustain it. Performances were often campy and flippant but moderately amusing.
