Ruth and her beautiful sister Eileen come to New York's Greenwich Village looking for "fame, fortune and a 'For Rent' sign on Barrow Street". They find an apartment (such as it is), but fame and fortune are a lot more elusive. Ruth gets the attention of playboy publisher Bob Baker when she submits a story about her gorgeous sister Eileen. She tries to keep his attention by convincing him that she, (a "spinsterish old-maid writer") and the gorgeous, man-getting Eileen are one and the same person. (imdb)

I can't say no to a well-structured Hollywood musical. Solid characters here: Jack Lemmon is The Man - nothing disturbs him, nothing shakes him off his suave game, confident and massively entertaining. Janet Leigh and Betty Garret - great chemistry between them and with the rest of the cast, superb comedic timing and lots and lots of energy. The supporting cast is memorable and each character has their unique presence too. Awesome dance sequences, slightly sub-par ending. Recommended.

It's witty, graceful, and a pretty good New York movie. It's also a very good movie about how terrible it is to live in a basement apartment, which is perhaps only relevant if, like me, you've lived in a basement apartment.

i loved this movie, the songs were good, the dance was awesome, and all the players were great. also, i added on points for a humongous conga line featuring the brazilian navy.

Bob Fosse's choreography and dancing are easily the highlight of this otherwise less than remarkable, decidedly third-tier classic Hollywood musical. In most other respects the direction and script feel sort of uninspired, with lots of fairly tedious sitcom-ish scenes set in the apartment and some broad slapstick humor. The musical numbers are somewhat better, if too infrequent. At best the film almost achieves a sort of high camp surrealist aspect in the absurdly ill-conceived climactic scenes.
