Viewed November 19, 2021. McCarey is one of the cinema’s great emotional manipulators and that’s in evidence here — it’s hard not to feel for Helen Hayes and her sheer terror at this rapidly changing world — but the context is so raw and unsettled that, unintentionally or not, it always plays like a scathing view of American domesticity a la Bigger Than Life.

Gives you an idea about the Red Scare propaganda the US was pushing in this era. Looking past the Communist issue, and focus on a mother rooting for the black sheep of her children, it's a okay drama. Not that it doesn't feel like they're pouring it on heavy here. What makes it even worse is that the extremely talented Robert Walker died during this production, and as the guy they all wanted you to hate too! And to think that Helen Hayes returned to Hollywood after a 17 year absence for this.
