A con man goes to great lengths to impress his visiting son by "borrowing" a mansion and posing as a successful boxing promoter in this classic comedy. Why the facade? After years of telling lies to his war-hero son, "Big Time" Percy Morgan isn't about to start telling the truth: that he's actually a big-time loser. (Netflix)

It's a great example of one thing I love about Poverty Row, seeing leading parts from actors who wouldn't get to shine anywhere else. The whole thing just works. It moves fast and is cute. It's light but still retains Ulmer's fascination with downtrodden characters. Some of it falls flat, like everything with the cook, but overall it felt like they had fun making it. I guess it's nothing to seek out, but it's a pretty good way to kill an hour on a rainy afternoon.

....come to think of it, straight comedy might not have been Edgar G. Ulmer's forte.
