Mystery Date

The 90s were a time when executives thought BD Wong was menacing. GWAR is in this for some reason.

This was way more fun than I expected, and especially, a lot better of a mystery-action movie. There were several twists I genuinely didn't see coming. (But jeez, that poor flower guy! How did he deserve all this!) Best performance goes to BD Wong, who absolutely kills it as the main bad guy.

Cool blood shirt, hot chick, but otherwise....eh.

At first you think you're in normal teen rom/com territory. Then add some "Risky Business" and "After Hours" and a couple of dead bodies... Fun to see Ethan Hawke in his first lead role, but although his slightly befuddled, naive charm is appealing enough, it's not really what he's about as an actor. BD Wong as a Tong bigshot is rather hilarious, but mostly ridiculous--his abilities lie more in "evil queen" territory.

Starts as a teen comedy / romance but gets some darker tones and almost becomes an action film or thriller. It's best asset is that you don't quite get where it's heading and the script contains some clever bits. Too bad that It doesn't quite stick the landing. Hawke and Polo are likeable and have a good chemistry. It's also very 90's: clothes, hair styles and some songs that I had forgotten. It was also fun to see Fisher Stevens of Succession fame here as an unlucky florist.
