Punctuated by typically eccentric Dickensian comic relief -- e.g., Forrester Harvey's drunken mausoleum keeper Durdles, E.E. Clive's officious Mayor Sapsea -- this emerges as a satisfying suspenser, enacted by a more-than-capable cast (particularly Rains as the tortured Jasper), that also offers a deft sketch of 1860s England. While not a true horror film, this incorporates many effectively creepy atmospheric gothic elements, including the crypt set from the original 1931 _Dracula_

Claude Rains sings. Yes, you read that right. Not casually, either, like in the "nuts in May" bit in _The Invisible Man_; he actually *performs*. Unfortunately, that's the only memorable part of this film

This has got a lot of the dark and gloomy elements that the other legendary Universal horror films of the era had. Quality acting with Claude Rains being a level above everybody else, but I was also impressed with the most beautiful man in Hollywood, Douglass Montgomery. He usually stars in chick flicks as eye-candy for the ladies with his feminine handsome facial features, but here he got to show more dimensions to his acting disguising himself as a old man trying to solve the murder mystery.
