Adapted from Verne, but it is difficult to discern his influence beyond obvious plot points.It is actually closer to Zeman's own A Jester's Tale in its mix of fantasy and political satire.Unlike that film, its satirical target is clear, but both films suffer from a lack of tension and narrative momentum.It is also less visually striking than his key works, and the feeling of déjà vu is unmistakable.Nonetheless, fans will find things to appreciate, especially as it was his last hybrid feature.

Very strange tones abound in this stylistically unique film. Zeman channels Verne by having a similarly imaginative, zany mastery of the 'fantastic', which means that sometimes plausibility is absolutely hurled to the wind. A pleasant sense of humour and the escalating absurdity of the events tend to keep things ticking along at a good pace.
