Won in Cannes. Don't know why. Maybe it triggered the exotic senses post-WWII with something from Bollywood. Does take on social unjust as the poor part of town gets taken advantage of by the rich. But it's nothing special. There's always tragedy in Indian movies from that time, but mostly it relates to love, usually forbidden class-related romance. Here the focus in more about the general unfair treatment from those with money and power. And at least it had some kind of retribution.
