After about 20 minutes I realized I've seen this movie before, only it used to be called "The Karate Kid". I only got two things out of this movie 1. I felt my testosterone levels rising, turning me into a primal ape, after which I ran outside and found the nearest man walking with a woman and beat the crap out of him to show that I had a bigger penis. 2. I just hate to rate a movie with Djimon Hounsou badly because I love that guy.

A computer made this movie, and it didn't even try. I saw it on a bad movies night with a friend, and it wasn't even good enough for that setting.

Under Quarantine Film Reviews #45: This movie is a shameless rip off of The Karate Kid without any of the heart and innocence of the original. Instead, it is replaced with hot and shirtless actors and starring someone who is attempting his worst Tom Cruise impersonation. Also its almost 2 hours long? WHY?

That kid looks like the love child of Tom Cruise and Ralph Macchio. Pretty typical high school fair.

Had a few decent one liners and some nice fights, but the rest of the movie was so detached from reality it should have been set in Middle Earth.

Karate Kid, this is not. From the clinically insane mother and the alcoholic father to the protagonist's loser friend and loose love interest, just about every character is intensely unlikeable. They stuffed in some of the worst music imaginable, too. Considering how the fights are based on realism, everyone having an endless gas tank is dumb. There are definitely worse put together movies out there, though.

This movie won't let me hate it. When I first saw it I rated it below average, but now the more I think about it, the more I like it. This is not a great film. No, it is a movie that's sometimes nonsensical, sometimes unintentional hilarious, with a possibly hypocritical message. It's like a party that eventualy goes to shit. Could have been better but it's still a party, and they clearly had fun in this stylish film. Almost ashamed to give this a 75 but I was entertained, despite the flaws.

The constant dated when it came out soundtrack really dates the movie and lowered my enjoyment. The dialogue is cringe worthy but the acting isn't too terrible. Its a decent enough average coming of age fight film.

Finally I did not give it up for second time and have seen this movie from the beginning to the very end. I do remember when I was kid and saw Bloodsport starring Jean-Claude van Damme, movie full of violence too and nevertheless I grow up as decent man as well. This is just like that Bloodsport but shooted to "meet nowadays needs" of nowadays audience. Switch off your brains. Otherwise mark it as 5/100

You can say what you like about this being a Karate Kid rip-off (and it would all be true), but you can't deny that this is a well-made, well-acted, stylish ass-kicking beatdown of a film. The young actors are hot, look the part, and have great chemistry together. The fight scenes are adrenaline-packed and bone-crunching. You get your training montages, your family scenes, menacing baddie, girlfriend... it's textbook stuff, but rarely is it executed so well. To be enjoyed, with popcorn aplenty.

It beats around the classic bushes of "The Karate Kid" and a bit of "Rocky" with none of what makes those films classics. To compare them would be like comparing a fantastic marinaded steak to a McDonalds hamburger - but who doesn't want that mushed patty once in a while? Actually, "NBD" works for the same audience that likes "You Got Served" and "Stomp the Yard." The acting isn't terrible, the fight sequences are decent, and it's overall entertaining, but it's not any good. It's junk food.

This is the payoff for the fact that MMA has exploded in mainstream culture. When I saw it with Obby, the first thing that came to mind was "Dawson's Creek meets mixed-martial arts", and my opinion of it hasn't really improved. Hounsou plays a compelling character, though.

It's a mindset that's summed up well when Ryan tells Jake, "You gotta give people what they want." Clearly, the filmmakers felt the same way. (pluggedin.com)

If you like mixed martial arts and sports, you'll love this movie. If not, then it won't seems as good. It has a really strong message about how everyone has their own fight, and you can't just quit, which I admired. But, the plot was lacking and predictable. The movie missed a great opportunity to put drama in the love triangle between Baja, McCarthy, and Tyler. It was touched upon, but not to its potential like in trailer. More of a thriller than a drama. Good movie, could've been better.

"The ethical nitwittery of "fight so you don't have to fight again" and invocations of The Iliad in this context brazenly transform a dumb bone-cruncher into a putridly dissembling one." - Bill Weber

Another cliché filled sports flick. Everything is seen before, but it does look really good. Technically it is great and there is some solid acting as well. And then there is Cam Gigandet. In yet another attempt to be accepted as the world's worst actor he imitates Brad Pitt from Fight Club down to every detail and then turns the insanity up by 500 %. He sucks as usual but he is very entertaining and has an impressively low body fat percentage.

Whilst talking about fight-movies as such, there is only ONE movie worth mentioning above all.... and that movie is Kara-te Kid. The first one, not the 2 sequels and exceptionally NOT the 4th in the franchise. Revenge, action and purpose has always been 3 strong things in film but in this one it has a purpose. They kept it from the ring, above the law, withing the limits of human strength. And they brought the "new" art of MMA into movies wich I myself found very interesting. Especially Djimon H
