Contrived and generic. I won't propose that this was the first time that Hollywood tried to pass off people who are clearly adults as high schoolers, but it might be the first time Hollywood thought that other industries shared the same delusion.

Drew Barrymore needs to grow the fuck up, start acting like a grown woman, and stop making insipid movies like this. Also, her teacher falls in love with her when---for all he knows---she's a goddamn high school student? And we're supposed to be CHARMED by this? The sleaze level is off the charts.

Very annoying and shallow. 1) The speech at the end doesn't make me okay with the kids who bully the others. If they wanted me to care for those kids they should have made characters not lifeless McEvil Replicas. 2) People don't cease to be friends with someone just because that person becomes popular unless they are also shallow. 3) The brother would end up in prison not coaching the baseball team.

This seems like the typical cutesy yet annoying romantic flick. The kids in that school really got duped by her. Someone must have realized she wasn't their peer. But I guess that would have would have ruined the movie. The scene in the ferriswheel is poignant. One other thing... If you had never seen this movie and looked at the picture to your left do you think you would run out to the video store to rent it. Don't answer the question

Besides not being very funny, I don't think the writers fully thought through just how creepy the movie's premise and conclusion are.

Actually thought Molly Shannon and John C. Reilly were the cuter couple.
I mean, it starts out alright enough, but has more and more dumb and boring streaks towards the end.
It's kind of embarassing, actually, if the major romantic parts in a romcom feel uncalled for. Probably one of the reasons for most of the many unbearably cheesy moments.
Performances were good, though, especially Reilly's.

A charming late-90s romcom where a 25-year old woman pretends to be 17 and her creepy teacher starts having inappropriate conversations with her. He also bails when he finds out she's actually 25. Also, her (older?) brother pretends to be 17, too, and starts dating a 16-year old gymnast. A lot of laughs in this romcom that will make you feel like you are an accessory to a crime.

It's funny when she runs into a door face first and goes head over heels. That is, quite literally, the only good part of the entire movie. Skip this unless you love romance flicks.

Considering the idea, it was clever, silly and amusing enough from step one to make me want to see it through as if it were a bull in a china shop. Only less destructive by the end of things.

Nerdy but bright young Chicago journalist Drew Barrymore poses as a high-schooler to research what it's like to be a teenager. And yep, it's still pretty grim if you're not in with the in-crowd. Mocked by the in-crowd, she hooks up with Leelee Sobieski's smart kids... and finds a keen supporter in cool teacher Michael Vartan. A big-hearted romance with Barrymore at her sunny best.

Is twilight level cringe, became more wholesome towards the end. Its sweet, cute and nice. But honestly the nerdy girl should have been lead. She was 10X prettier then the lead character. Its more of a 30 year old single women who’s desperate to find a husband film. Still an alright movie with a solid soundtrack

I watched this at 3am because I have a disastrous and unhealthy sleep schedule. Pretty weird tbh that the main romantic interest is a teacher who evidentially develops a crush on who he thinks is his 17 year old student and we’re meant to cheer. Also weird the movie tries to position Leelee Sobieski as the nerdiest and most unpopular girl in school; I’m quite certain that if Leelee Sobieski went to my high school all the guys would have been striving to nut in her

The 90s were a messy time in America, post-Cold-War, pre-9/11, full of conflicting desires and contradictory art; a lot of good 90s movies have inextricable parts that suck, and a lot of bad 90s movies have characters, themes, moments, that are startlingly meaningful even today. This is closer to the latter; Josie is a caricature on a nonsense mission, but Barrymore makes her worth investing in, and there are moments when her pain becomes suddenly, horribly Real. I'm glad nerdy girls had this.

It's been awhile. It may be worse than I recall, but when I was younger and easier to please, it was pretty sweet & simple. The funniest comment I heard about it was “This is the Police song ‘Don’t Stand So Close To Me’ as a romantic comedy.” Accurate. Also amazing. 🤣

Perfectly written rom-com from the heroine's point of view - if Drew Barrymore could get hold of material like this every couple of years, she'd be the biggest female star in the world.

Drew Barrymore almost always plays a sweet, vulnerable character, and this movie is no different. When she cries, I cry with her; when she laughs with effervescent joy, I feel the same inside. She had great chemistry with Michael Vartan as her love interest; no so much with David Arquette as her brother, though. Sure, it's a predictable love story, but it was nice nonetheless.

the fantasy plays sweetly although the ending becomes rather belabored.
Nevertheless, one of the finest of this type to grace the screen in awhile.
