Wonderful. Equal parts didactic, Disney, and Arthouse. Great vision, and amazing sound design from Alan Splet. But doesn't quite reach its goal.

Not bad, but I just don't... really... *care* all that much about this story, the characters, or the issues involved. It's commendable to do something different, but...

A biologist (Charles Martin Smith) is sent to the Arctic to prove that wolves are decimating the caribou. He discovers that the wolves are far more complex than previously thought. A few preachy moments and too much voiceover can't outweigh the transcendentally lovely scenes on display; Carroll Ballard tops THE BLACK STALLION for lyricism, evoking the desolate beauty of the Arctic with the aid Hiro Narita's astounding cinematography and Mark Isham's hauntingly beautiful music. Fine performances.

All signs in the first act point to a cheesy groan worthy experience. But then the film's atmosphere found its footing, the bumbling lead character became sympathetic and his actions understandable, and the Inuit actors added quite a bit to the film. It also, despite a low budget feel, is quite beautifully shot with a slight documentary style. It's not subtle, but not quite heavy handed either, making its themes and perspective unmistakable without jamming an answer down your throat.

I've never been much into nature films, but this combination of drama and nature is utterly charming and powerful. Possibly Disney's best live action feature.

Much better than I expected. The landscape shots are amazing, as well as the wildlife shots. I simply love the 80's synth scores, and the Inuits. There was too much man ass though.

Really good "man alone in nature" film, reminiscent of others like "Into the Wild", "Grizzly Man", etc. Very good and recommended.

Nature-filmy light drama. Quite charming.

Ecological parable focused on the mild existential crisis of one researcher. Mostly avoids heavy-handedness, concentrating on affective details and maximising the cinematic potential of the few elements with which to work. Nice that it doesn't shy away from the brutality of nature, even if it ultimately argues for some kind of former harmonious balance between humans and nature (now threatened by modern encroachment and destruction). About as good as this kind of thing can get, and never dull.

For some users who like nature this movie will be awesome but I think it was a bit boring after 1 hour. Good there were some funny, hilarious scenes like those rats. The end was also good and funny.

I share a particular taste for the beauty in most nature films.

I miss movies like these. I find them really hard to find. Its poetic nature with emphasis on nature, or just being, is something I long for yet hardly ever get. The pixelated scenery was stunning and adds to the charm. Arctic tundra is beautiful. The characters were charming. Great movie, I'm grateful I found it.

A quietly meandering story of a man IN nature instead of against it, it grants the viewer plenty of time to retrospect in what they see and hear and think. I know I put this in my action challenge because it has that tag on Letterboxd, but there's really not much action here besides one short scene. Plus running naked among the caribou, I guess. Also, I really like wolves. Obviously.
