This suspense drama was based on a novel by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Riviere (John Barrymore), who operates an air delivery service, is fanatical in his dedication to service, putting prompt delivery before the safety of his men or his fleet after receiving a contract to help transport the mail. This may be one of the more vignette-y attempts at the early 30s attempts to throw a lot of stars in a picture to make a buck. Gable is quite good, especially considering 90% of his screen time is piloting a plane and looking grim. Good photography and snappy direction, too. But you can tell it's a story that never really had a solid idea of where it was going or why, and a lot of good work is lost in a lot of forgettable dialogue drivel.

Myrna Loy is underutilized, she has only two scenes! They should have made her Clark Gable’s wife. Overall it is a pretty solid story, even if it doesn’t succeed at creating tension; the cinematography is better than I expected, nice plane shots and I love the “showing different kinds of people that the plane is passing above”

Talk about heavyweights on the actor side! So with such a strong cast one would think they'd have more use for them. Except they focus so much of the screen time on flying and aviation communication that they forget to let the characters develop enough for one to care for them. Divided between them there really isn't much time each get on screen as they have different roles in the stories and rarely meet. They could have put anyone in those roles and it wouldn't have mattered to the end result.
