Night School

Ken Hughes, director of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"(1968), in his last film ever, managed to produce maybe the most tense reveal of a decapitated head involving a pot of beef stew ever, so for being a generic early 80's slasher/Giallo, there's still a handful of small moments and charms to make this a watchable enough thriller.

There are definitely some sequences that keep it from being a total slog, but in the whole of their Boston locale, there's definitely not anyone even attempting to do a Boston accent. And, of course, there's a scene where a man rubs some mysterious gooey red substance all over a naked woman in the shower as part foreplay, part blood ritual. I'm still processing that one.

The only memorable scene is the tension of the cook finding a decapitated head in a pot of stew.

There are definitely shades of Italian Giallo in this early slasher: sleazy characters, bizarre motivations, star Leonard Mann, nudity and a killer who wears a motorcycle helmet. The tone is quite strange: brutal kill scenes (although not that much gore) are taking turns with wisecracking cops. Occasionally the filmmakers seem to be having fun with the rules of the genre. Still the film lacks that special something: maybe it needed groovier cinematography, Morricone score and some J&B bottles.

Predictable, boring. Severe case of teleporting killer

Lame and extremely forgettable slasher that shows that it didn't take long for the genre to hit rock bottom. Very Law & Order feel, very generic. Though the lead actress has a rockin' bod. It was the 80s, bods were allowed to be rockin' back then, right? Are they now? Where am I? Who are you? Go away.

Utterly generic slasher/American giallo with a woeful lead performance by Rachel Ward. So faceless you would think it was a gorier lost episode of Law & Order: SVU. The shiny, motorcycle killer look is pretty cool (stolen from Strip Nude For Your Killer) but yeh, skip it.

Beyond the fantastic opening scene, this isn't much. Bad characters & a poor script combine with a sluggish pace and repetitive, uninteresting kills to make for a major missed opportunity of early-80's horror. The performances are decent, but none of the characters are likeable or interesting. The big twist is super predictable, & there's one minor twist towards the end that's just...wow. Pretty bad look in hindsight. The female characters are all written in noticeably bad taste. Skippable.
