De Niro does his best, but his character is just not believable. He's a lawyer, and he visits a boxing gym one time, and all of a sudden he's a boxing promoter. What? Why?! There's no subtlety here whatsoever, either in the character development or in Irwin Winkler's direction. This film also has one of the most intrusive soundtracks I've ever heard.

DeNiro's all motormouth flourish, plus probably the biggest black mark against Richard Price's screenplay career, as at least his numerous other 80s-90s tonal fuckups don't squander brilliant source material.

A lot of people - actors, camera operators, set designers - work really hard to bring life to this, but somehow it remains stuck in Idle for most of its runtime, getting rid of almost everything that made the original great and giving us precious little in exchange.
