I might have seen a different movie than others cuz this really did it for me. The directing is wonderful, with a great usage of space and atmospheric shots of scenery, while never shying away from the brutality of the violence, which--depending on the scene--is either fantastically choreographed but not overdrawn or blunt and to the point (I respected both). I cared about the characters, the script was not the most amazing but still great. The ending was so ridiculously cathartic as well.

This movie dives deep into the chaotic and violent world of Korean gangs. The movie is gritty, dirty, messy, bloody, and entirely entertaining. It has some great atmosphere, good music, good acting, good production quality, and smart dialog. The final act was shocking and sad but quite satisfying. Well worth watching.

Stylish, slowburn drama/thriller. Violence is explosive and feels actually painful. Lots of contemplation and hanging around in between (maybe a bit too similar to Sonatine by Kitano?). Great food scenes. Next life goal: go to South Korea and eat Mulhoe all day.

Better than I expected. A criminal is set up and has to lay low on an island where he is ultimately hunted by his enemy and his own boss.. I loved the end fight and the idea to mix in the woman too.

I'll admit, I got very disinterested during the second act. Kim is a ridiculously unlikeable character for most of the movie, even after learning about her terminal illness, and it's not until she sees the peril that Tae-goo is faced with that she becomes relatable. The overall story, though, was very impactful; a uniquely harsh look at Korea's criminal world. While fittingly bleak, the ending delivers some much needed catharsis. Sometimes too slow for its own good but overall well worth seeing.
