Fascinatingly misguided - plays like a butchered Wikipedia entry of The Iliad, read after drinking ayahuasca. There are so many clearly great ideas and threads whispered and abandoned (a Luciferian hero's journey? allllllllrighty then!). Cronenberg is a hoot. If this is ever remade as a limited series on Premium Cable, then I think we'll have something.

In all honesty, I didn't have a particularly firm grasp on what the hell was going on here, or why I should be interested in it. I get the impression this was always going to be a bit of a struggle to get to the screen. Cronenberg brings some fine creepiness to the party, and there is a load of ambition and imagination behind the film as a whole, but it just didn't work for me, sadly.

Poorly made horror film that is not scary when it tries to be, and is not funny when it tries to be. Interesting mutant designs are really all that's there.

What a cool idea. I hope that this film earns a place in horror history. It is pretty well made and I'll never forget the movie poster for it because I got it from our local video store when they took it down.

Don't give Clive BArker free reign to do what he wants because you might get bullshit nonsense like this no wonder the studio went apeshit trying to salvage this garbage. The Elfman score is totally out of place with a movie like this I kept waiting for Batman to swoop in. Watch this for Cronenberg: total ghoul.

Works well as a spectacle. Ridiculous and entertaining. Clive Barker's direction is rough and unfocused, obviously a first film. Despite that, the film is fun and runs with its concept. Barker's trademark monster design is full bore. Makeup effects can be tacky but still entertaining to observe. Performances range from awkward to hammy. Cronenberg is beyond fun to watch. Cliffhanger ending and jilted assembly makes it imperfect, but the Director's Cut is a good time.

It's a god damn mess of a film, but it's still pretty fun to watch. Cronenberg's weird performance might be the best part of the whole film. Alternate review: "No Boone, you are the monsters." And then Boone was Cabal.

It's like Little Monsters + Princess Bride in Halloween Town, but rated R. All with an Elfman score. Absolutely incoherent but a lot of fun.

(Theatrical cut): On a subtextual level, Nightbreed addresses the difficulty of reconciling the 'other' with normative society which is governed by the deceptive illusions of appearance, but the expression of this idea is completely juvenile, resulting in a film designed to appeal to angsty goths and metalheads who haven't escaped adolesence. Effort clearly went into the set and makeup designs, but it's a sloppy disjointed film that only comes alive in the final reel when two worlds collide.

It doesn't really work as a package but there are a couple of great aspects like some of the wildly imaginative design elements and the casting of David freaking Cronenberg. Some of the effects are great, some are terrible, some of the monster designs are awesome and some are uber goofy. A firm grasp on tone could be what ties everything together, but unfortunately the tone is all over the place, and Danny Elfman's score is especially unfitting for much of the film.

A decent little horror flick. The pace and story is a little spotty and rushed in places, but David Cronenberg plays the sick villain to perfection.

Seems like part of a much longer film that has been cut down too much. Also, some of the dialog is particularly groan-worthy, especially the stupid one-liners.

The short scene in which the lead's girlfriend is walking through the underground city makes the whole movie...giving us a glimpse into the demented mind of Clive Barker, while also showing how awesome a flick this could have been if they had only taken it in a different direction.

There's a mostly decent story buried amidst all the B-movie elements (bad acting, inconsistent character motivations & cheesy efx) even in the director's cut. Clive Barker succeeds at establishing that monsters are people 2, but, given his level of popularity, 1 can only assume the man must be a hell of a novelist since his cinematic contributions don't seem 2 consist of more than being an improvement over slasher films (what isn't?) and some very memorable character designs

If nothing else, it's a worthy successor to Hellraiser in the makeup and effects department. This movie is just brimming with great monster effects, and while the plot might be a little convoluted or otherwise lacking, it doesn't disappoint in spectacle.

Saw the director's cut. Works better in the 21st century than when it first released in a cut down version. Barker's fascination with sex and horror works as a story of the freaks living in their own freak Kingdom and hunted down by the gun waiving conservatives. A simple metaphor for a more and more divided USA.

This one is a mix for me. Great creature effects and music and quite an original plot, but the acting and dialogue are pretty rough. Still an entertaining horror/sci-fi.

120m Director's cut - A film of frustrating highs and lows - the creature effects are terrific, and the world they inhabit (resembling 90s TV horror sets) is well realised, but the narrative itself is so muddled (not helped by ineffectual performances from Sheffer and Bobby) that it becomes difficult to know or care about the thrust of the story - the notorious production problems don't seem to have been alleviated in this cut of the film. Nice work by Cronenberg as chief slimeball!

The victim of several reshoots, scheduling delays, and skirmishes with the MPAA. While this doesn't quite sustain the intensity level of Barker's best work, there are more than enough demented diversions -- including a cameo by John Agar -- to satisfy quality-seeking scare buffs.

Barker's imagination has always been engaging and quite original, this stands doubly for the monster design in his movies, and this one is proof of that. Story wise, it's only partially lacking, but it still stands as a drastically watchable movie.

The most serious monster movie ever made. Perhaps a good movie with this premise could work, as an allegory for how society treats outcasts, but the camp and the awful makeup made me unable to see the movie like that. My hatred for Clive Barker has been reignited.

This movie has a hell lot of lore. Too bad it won't elaborate on any of it. But for what it is lacking in the storytelling department, it makes up for (and then some) with stellar creature design, makeup and campy fun. The bombastic, gory spectacle really is the main attraction here. Who is this Boone and what motivates him? I couldn't tell you. Character development? Ha ha, good one! But the movie seems to be aware of its limitations and has fun with it. And so did I.

Wow, that was... something. It really works more like a fantasy movie than a horror movie with an insane amount of different and very creative monsters dominating most of the screentime. It has some horrible acting all around and some pretty funny special effects, but some stuff does work a little bit better effect-wise. I can only imagine the time and effort it took to come up with all these creepy monsters and then making them come alive in the movie.
