Greenaway returns to The Draughtman's Contract territory with Nightwatching, concerned with the social impact of art and its capacity to destroy the lives of its creators. It is a speculative account of Rembrandt's fall from grace after being targeted for his portrayal of a Dutch militia. Greenaway successfully merges his trademark theatrical style with his extra cinema activities, creating real intrigue around Rembrant's classic, but it lacks wit and the dramatics are overly arch, even for him.

I haven't forgiven Greenaway for the shit he pulled in The Baby of Macon but this reminded me of the possible beauty of his art, even if it is very conventional by his recent standards. The lighting is impossibly gorgeous, and the sadness it's frequently imbued with surprisingly affecting. It makes me want to re-watch all his classics on proper Blu-Ray transfers, including this one.

Ostentatious, and with naturally brilliant use of lighting and colour, and an excellent performance from Martin Freeman. Wish it went more into the accusations though - instead the film kinda delivers this stuff piecemeal before essentially turning into a brief Art History lecture. Certainly worth a watch, I might even pay a visit to the Rijksmuseum next time I'm over...

Feels like decidedly lesser Greenaway. Everything is perfectly "his", yet something is lacking in almost every aspect he is sometimes brilliant at. His omnipresent theatricality here just feels too stagy, the dialogue is as arch as ever but rarely funny, and the tone is unusually heavy-handed. Bizarrely, there are even some sappy moments (which is not something i thought i would ever say about a Greenaway film). Still, hardly a bad film by any normal standards.
