The actual story is such a tragic confluence of astronomical circumstance and human irrationality that it crosses the threshold of what can be captured. Sometimes life is too absurd to make art about.

Delving deep into this man's desperation and despondence, each scene pieces another part of his disturbed, isolated life together to linearly show what lead to his way of thinking. This film is able to get close to its material because it’s an intelligent and considerate account of the disturbed and the disturbing things they may do. Landry Jones works excellently to inhabit this troubling role, and Davis is remarkable as his frustrated mother.

Odd, one-note study of "Nitram" which perhaps sets itself a difficult task of explaining the inexplicable; it's the confluence of a series of bizarre, even unlikely events that leads to this tragedy, and neither Kurzel nor Grant seem to be able to get a handle on the randomness, trying to find a weak, reverse engineered profundity that really doesn't exist, and leaving the film hollow at its core. Fine performances from the star quartet can't shed much light on this probably unfilmable material.

The public taste for detailing the lives and motives of mass shooters has dwindled lately, as doing so tends to anonymize the victims that much more. But Kurzel, maps out an exceptionally sad and convincing path to the incident, leaning on Jones’ brute physicality and childlike emotional swings to suggest that Martin/Nitram acted on a narrowing set of options. One of those options—dependent on easy access to multiple firearms—could have been taken away.

Maybe the US government went through the same shit... maybe he is just a slow, isolated, depressed boy. It explains all these wars around the world.

I don't know the extent to which this replicates the true story it is based on, but regardless, it's fantastic script that describes a volatile, anti-social eccentric and his social interactions with exceeding reliability, avoiding pop psychology. The performances, moreover, are flawless. Caleb Landry Jones deserves every plaudit for his immaculately disturbing psycho.
