Life for four couples in a suburban development differs from the billboards. After an opening showing that already in 1957 parents were losing the battle for the attention of their children to television, we find the problems of automation, loneliness, racial discrimination, alcoholism, violence and the feeling of non-existence. Woodward is the standout performer, and everyone works hard, but as a pre-Albee exploration of modern American life it ends up as too much of a soap opera melodrama.
