Noita palaa elämään

Watching these old Finnish movies requires a little bit of tolerance and understanding of the times. This movie is fairly daring for its time, displaying not only witchcraft but also rather ample amounts of nudity when the witch is dancing in the swamp, luring men to fall into her graces. It's a curiosity, a bit silly and uneven with what it wants to be, but I enjoyed watching it. Mirja Mane makes for a magical witch!

More or less okay written horror story; swamp grave, witch, witchcraft, corps and witch hunt. Good, sexy and brave (full frontal nudity) main role actress. But directing and the other actors pretty stiff and bad. Recommened Finnish horror oldie; we do not have them that much those times. Does not reach even close to the best Finnish horror movie: Valkoinen peura/The White Reindeer from 1952 as well.

A small village goes collectively crazy around the idea of an ancient swamp-witch's possible return. The acting is pretty stiff other than Mirja Mane but that does weirdly little harm to this dreamy story. Decently written with a sense for both comedy and tension. Nothing truly exceptional but an enjoyably raucous oddity from an age when Finnish cinema didn't generally tend to suck so hard. Made me rewatch The White Reindeer (also from 1952) which is still utterly brilliant.

Typically poor Finnish acting and a lackluster story. However, I was positively surprised by the cinematography and the style in which the sorcerous elements of the film were conveyed.
