A nice atmospheric horror film with just enough creepy moments to sustain the long running time. The mixture of handheld documentary-style camera work and fake TV program clips work well.

Never really manages to go from 'pretty damn creepy' to 'paralysingly scary', but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Making it a documentary filmed over multiple weeks makes it quite realistic and was a welcome change from most handheld-horror films. It spends a lot of time on backstory-elements (news reports, tv show clips) which doesn't always pay off. Still, fans of slow and less pulse-poundingly gory horror might want to give this a chance.

I feel like this is one of those "you had to be there" films for the mid-2000's, riding the wave of handheld fake documentaries and pre-youtube grainy digital media. Still creates an effective atmosphere of unease for the most part.

Extremely well made and acted. I could almost believe that this was actual found footage. The story is very interesting and I found myself becoming invested and wanting to know the answer to the mystery. It got creepy towards the end but I wouldn't call it scary.

It starts off entertainingly with interviews and tv show segments, then the story unfolds to become really interesting, with unexpected things happening without the cues you'd expect. Towards the end it really gets amazing when it all comes together with some crazy scenes and story points. I found it to be the perfect level of not too heavy handed with the storytelling while not being ridiculously obtuse either. It also makes use of one of my favourite things: really creepy sounds.

Duking it out with The Taking of Deborah Logan and Troll Hunter at the top of the found footage heap — what's this? Paranormal Activity 3 with a steel chair? IT'S NOT EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE HERE! *Troll Hunter gets brained* BAH GAWD THAT MOVIE HAS A FAMILY. Anyway, with Troll Hunter out of the way, Noroi wins 'cause folklore is better than semi-Lovecraft. (I forgot Lake Mungo existed until just this second. Lake Mungo is better than Noroi)

The more I think over it, the more I liked the film's steady and mixed-footage style. The mythology slowly comes out and the people involved are unaware of what's happening until it's too late. It gets a little too Blair Witch near the end, but I suppose that's what happens with horror mockumentaries. Oh, and those faces are creepy as shit.

It didn't work for me. The closer it got to the end, the more dumber it was.

A truly scary movie that is structured like a genuine documentary, with segments from variety shows and other produced vignettes integrated. Definitely a slow burn, but it allows the creepiness to linger for longer. There are no jumpscares, and the scariest parts are zoomed in on as if you were watching a real documentary. The psychic character was more goofy than disturbing, and during the more hectic scenes it's hard to see what's happening. The tone and pacing are the highlights though.

Besides the fact that it's constantly cockteasing the viewer with 'suspense' without ever delivering a satisfyingly scary moment, the movie is okay. It has the atmosphere of The Blair Witch Project due to it being filmed like a documentary but the supposedly creepy moments - like showing a parent and her kid and then having a dialog pop up saying that they died a few days lalter - left almost no impact. It's better than a lot of Hollywood horror though as the actors are good.

Not sure if actual Japanese documentaries are that dry and unpolished or not, but it was otherwise a decent movie. Not all that scary, but fairly interesting if you had a lot of patience.

Loved it. The found footage/mockumentary style was a perfect fit for the subject and executed extremely well. The folklore, mystery, and investigation elements are all compelling, and there are just enough creepy moments scattered throughout and spaced far enough apart to remain surprising and unsettling

I really liked how it leaned hard into the TV show documentary part. It really grounded the film and its intense dedication to lore will help it with repeated viewings (Unlike Blair Witch, which its clearly inspired by and suffers hard from repeated viewings). Its dedication to TV hurts it though, throughout the film, anytime a scary thing happens, the movie will show the scene again and zoom in. That mixed with low budget CGI does make it feel like a "SPOOKY SCARY" youtube video at points.

Excellent setup and atmosphere throughout, but for what you get at the end, it feels like either the story itself should have been simpler, or the ending should have been more developed.

Overall Enjoyment: 35/40, Plot/Themes: 15/20, Cinematography/Direction: 15/20, Acting/Writing: 10/20 This horror found footage film doesn't really shake up the genre or turn any conventions on their head. Yet it does nail all of those genre standards pretty well, while also bringing a new story/monster entity to the table. Very well done, fun, and scary.

Yeah, it gets a bit daft as the story unravels, but the ride that this found footage flick takes you on is as wonderful as it intriguing. It bucks the trend of j-horror by having an inflated runtime but it is worth almost every second!

It's committed to its premise of being a certain type of documentary, but it fails in most other regards. The horror isn't scary nor do the unfortunate happenings feel connected until conveniently tied together at the end. The film seems to forget about the idea of character at all, with the players simply fit into the role they're supposed to serve for the framework of the movie.

Criticker rocks for recommending this.Very interesting and creepy.Few discrepancies in the last 30 mins.Well structured, few pacing issues but nothing significant. The film purposefully keeps the reason behind the mysteries in the movie incomplete. This gives the audience the scope to speculate and therefore indulge in the movie, which could backfire with few dismissing it as logically defunct and unrefined. Is it only me who thinks that there are at at least few similarities with Haneke's Cache?

Another very poor entry in the barrage of neo-Japanese-horror films to follow Ringu, Noroi does a bunch of things wrong. Like most of its kin, it's set to the restricting form of a mystery, which means it's a series of ever more needless, boring explanations. It relies heavily on acting hysterics, and uses too obvious scare tactics like strange baby noises and dead birds. Often, it lamely imitates Blair Witch Project, and in general it's bereft of anything like an actual surprise.

Started out promising, but got pretty goofy and unconvincing as it continued. I liked that it wasn't just a found footage camera man type movie though, as it also spliced news, tv show, and home movie footage in a cool back and forth that makes the creepy supernatural elements seem more real at first. But as more is explained it just falls apart. It really gives too much away. But on a technical/ editing level, it's worth seeing.

It's not bad if you're in the mood for it. I like that it has a lot of bizarre mythological details, like how dead pidgeons or pidgeons flying into your window are a sign that the demon is near.
