I suppose there's a certain valiance to doing a movie like this, and sometimes they work, but this one bored the bejeebers out of me.

This is a story of revenge as a series of highly dramatic and ritualised killings (sacrifices for some). Here Rivette strikes yet another blow to cinema as reality-as-safely-contained-on/in-the-screen by furthering his case for cinema as potentially and in some instances necessarily uber-theatrical (with the camera as a sometimes explicit surveillance device). But Rivette is no surrealist, he is a pragmaticist fantasist, which in this film often manifests in carnivalesque forms and functions.

Totally unique, surreal and memorable. If you can find this film, you need to see it, if only for the sheer experience of it all. It's a world I love getting lost in.

I wanted to like this so much more, but it never really clicked with me. But this is a unique film nevertheless with a great soundtrack and the last scene is stellar. I'll give this one a re-watch someday, that's for sure.

I'm not exactly sure what I just watched, but I found it to be a very enjoyable experience throughout. Wouldn't hesitate to watch this film again.

I think Geraldine Chaplin might be the most interesting actress? Someone, put her in a movie with Elina Lowensohn and Lili Taylor so I'd never have to watch anything else ever again.
