Charlize Theron made a fine performance on a bit unstable story. Frances McDormand and Amber Heard were okay on their part. If the story started interesting, it lost it's path somewhere after that.

I hate "inspired by a true story". It's hard to get indignant about the things you want me to get indignant about when you don't tell me if they actually happened or not. It's also hard to get indignant about it when your movie has clichéd crap in it, like the attorney bullying the witness until he finally breaks down and blurts out the truth... or the scene where, one by one, other characters slowly and silently stand up in support of the protagonist. That stuff is awful.

Plain rural drama worth seeing just because of Therón's powerful performance.

terrible. any actor or director who accepted to take any part in that ridiculous final court scene should be punished, let alone be nominated for an oscar.

Really, really bad movie. Movies that suck ass and take themselves very seriously are disasters. That's what this is. And it's just shameless in its melodramatic heartstring pulling. Perhaps worse than Crash in that regard. Stay away from this prodigious hunk of excrement.

Another great performance by Charlize Theron. This film also has good supporting work by Frances McDormand and Woody Harrelson.

A good working class drama. Charlize Theron was great as was the majority of the cast (even though some of the side characters were one note). Some sexual harassment and abuse makes it a movie I don't have much interest in seeing again as it's tough to watch and made me feel quite uncomfortable.

This feels super familiar. Nothing trendsetting , nothing special, but it is a talented cast all around. Worth seeing.

As in Monster, Theron loses herself and channels a real person. The movie is quite true to the real incident (I lived there) and rates as a must see for those who want to understand the feminist movement. Great courtroom and union hall scenes.

Great performances by Theron and McDormand. It has its contrived moments, but it's good overall. Some beautiful, sweeping shots of the mines and the north country in general.

Niki caro's feature about sex harrasment and discrimination at a coal mine, stars Charlize Theron in a powerful role that shows her yet again in a tough situation. Theron puts in a good performance as a miner willing to take on the mine and still have a bond with her children. All of the perfomances are very good by Frances McDormand, Sissy Spacek, Sean Bean. Very well made film.

I liked this movie, well written and directed, and so what if it's feminist! Everything well done except for the Frances McDormand part which was over the top studio by the numbers manipulating for an oscar nom. The movie nonetheless struck a nerve.

In the grand tradition of Norma Rae comes a heartwarming and inspiring story of a woman standing up against sexism and showing who she truly is... or thats how the film makers would like to have you look at the story. North Country is an appallingly sugary and often outrageously contrived look at life in a small town, women's rights, the shadiness of corporate America. Hell, this movie really isn't about anything at all. Its just a vacuous hole clamoring for awards- watch Charlize Theron despe

Very moving and inspiring movie, right up until the courtroom scene which took a colossal dump on everything that happened prior. That this movie same so close just made the letdown that much more disappointing.

Niki Caro seems obsessed with wanting to move the audience to tears by mercilessly beating Theron's Josie down to award her martyr status. It's difficult to believe even a single moment in this film, filled to the brim with self-important speeches about how difficult the lives of these characters are. The finale is appalling; I am shocked that audience members stood for it. It borders on offensive.

Most of the film is good but the parts in the courtroom are beyond cheesy. Despite the excellent cast the final product somehow feels like a bit less than the sum of its parts.

Theron melts into her character here, displaying with ease both Josie's brokenness and courage. Her experiences of abuse and her lonely fight for her rights are tough to watch but are thoughtfully shown, as picturesque scenes of the equally isolated Minnesota countryside and its bleak mines punctuate her story along with clips of her eventual court case. The supporting cast here is impeccable and solidifies this moving film that comes to a satisfyingly redemptive and tear-jerking conclusion.

I watched this movie in 2018 based on a recommendation in a newspaper article, 13 years after it was released. The basic premise of sexual harassment at workplace would probably drive away a lot of viewers but you really need to see this movie to see how far we have come. The prejudices of the '80s America are brilliantly highlighted in the movie. The movie sticks to the plot, is realistic and doesn't get preachy. I got my 2 hours worth watching it. You will too.

Noble and well-intentioned but hampered by a sometimes ridiculously overdrawn screenplay (resembling a gussied-up TVM) which seems to lack faith that the material has inherent emotional resonance, instead going the most obvious, ham-handed route to ensure the audience “Gets It” (the climactic courtroom scene has to be seen to be believed). A great ensemble is largely wasted, though Theron is a solid lead, and Jenkins even manages to wring some genuine emotion from his underwritten role.
