So much better than it needed to be/should have been, even if it's still basically Rockism the Motion Picture (though fortunately not to Richard Linklater/Cameron Crowe extremes). To be fair, i can sort of relate to it to a ridiculous degree, which obviously helps. That said, i'm still not sure how their band jumped a few decades ahead to become the first '80s college rock band in the mid-'60s (or how that guy could afford a fucking Rickenbacker even then).

Honestly not all that well-made--the editing, particularly, is often pretty jarringly bad. But it's smartly written, and the best thing about it is its absolute lack of sentimentality. Here's a flick that doesn't view the 1960's through wistful, rose-colored glasses and understands that the decade was often pretty detrimental, if not dangerous, to a lot of people who weren't ready for what its changes had to offer. Good acting, great music, several really sharp standout moments.

a bittersweet study in collective need, evasion and solipsism...

An interesting look into the 60's music scene through the eyes of a failing cover band. The movie does portray how important music was during that time, you also feel bad about people just starting out in the business when they hear new Beatles and Rolling Stones music coming out all the time. The main character really isn't likable and sometimes I found myself hoping that James Gandolfini would shave his kids hair during his sleep. Still, it's a good drama with great music.

Great music, obviously. But the characters weren't at all likeable - they were all clichéd to hell. Expected a better script from the guy who created The Sopranos, for chrissakes.

I find stories like this to be comforting, because I know that I would have loved them as a kid. Otherwise, it's not so great, especially because it's coming from David fucking Chase. It actually seems like it coulda been a good TV pilot, if that counts for anything. Gandolfini is awesome. I love all the 60s touches and the soundtrack is great, but it amounts to basically nothing beyond fun.

I haven't seen "The Sopranos". That said, this is a good slice of life film that sometimes feels as if it could have been better had it taken a few leaps.

i totally bought into this story of a band that didn't make it big, the whole cast was top shelf especially huston as eugene. not much happens but there was just enough to keep me going along and the superb soundtrack helped as well.......

It's, good, but I'm not looking for "good" when it comes to Chase. No regrets.

Evokes the period quite well but everything else about this film is meandering and all over the place.
