This is totally predictable and all different levels of cheesy... but somehow the movie is able to make it work. I guess JC is the only 90s action star that could pull this off. In the action department the movie does disappoint. While Ted Levine makes for a good threatening top henchmen, it isn't for one second believable he could last for one round with the Muscles from Brussels. So I found this more enjoyable than it should have been, but for other reasons than I expected coming in.

Levine was wasted, and it isn't even over-the-top enough to be enjoyably bad. Just bad.

The star possesses a soulful deadpan to go along with, or compensate for, his overinflated torso and martial-arts monkeyshines; and Levine's resonant baritone sounds as though he really means business as the bad guy. But the lack of conviction becomes epidemic: a marathon chase scene; a conscious evocation of _Home Alone_, with Culkin taking out one of the thugs; a slow-slow-slow-motion shootout.

Van Damme movies sort of blend together into one mixed bag only enjoyable by Damme's fight sequences. Here there's no exception. Land developers try to kill a woman and her two kids for her farm - Van Damme sleeps in a tent outside and comes to save the day - is that a great storyline or what?

Connoisseurs of bad cinema beware! This film does not contain the usual "je ne sais quoi" of a JCVD gem. Instead, it features a veritable lumberyard of wooden drama and a scene in which JCVD exposes himself to children.

Escaping from a prison bus Sam (Van Damme) finds a quiet space in some woods to camp out but the land belongs to single mum Clydie Anderson (Rosanna Arquette - In the Deep Woods) who is having problems with a nearby company trying to develop the area and need her land. When one night Sam saves Clydie and her children from some heavies trying to scare her off she asks him to move in to the barn and he becomes embroiled in the drama as the evil businessman steps up the pressure on Clydie.

I like Lonewolf's point about Van Damme being the only action star then who could pull this off, that is, a stand-yr-ground actioner crossed with a hunky-drifter-in-the-hayloft Harlequin-er. He's not good or anything, but only ridiculous about a third of the time. Arquette helps a lot, save the sadness of an actress as good as her, having spoken about being coerced into nudity, getting so freaking nude in a Van Damme movie right before being blackballed for not fucking Harvey Weinstein.

There’s a shit ton of things that haven’t aged well in 30 years (protagonist peeping on the female lead, adult men hanging out with preschoolers without parental consent, kids seeing adult dicks, sex jokes with minors, etc..) But the film has a homy “The Fugitive” vibe to it. Van Damme is a misunderstood criminal who helps out the community and acts as a surrogate father to a fatherless young boy. As some reviewers have put it: A harlequin action movie.
