Very nuanced and atmospheric for an early talky that Hitch didn't even want to make. Exciting climax and passable (if stagey) acting.

The runaway train sequence makes Number 17 worth checking out, but the plot never completely meshes together, and the comic relief gets old quick.

Dull suspenser is really only interesting as a curio from Hitchcock - overwrought performances and monotonous pacing almost sink it, however the climactic train chase is a lot of fun, and shows flashes of the master director Hitch would become.

Confusing, both deliberately and not. Some very nice use of shadows and angles to create suspense, but the production seems rushed and low budget. And filming in both silent w/ dub and talking film you get cutting in two different speeds making a lot of the action scenes comical. Leon M. Lion as the weird character Ben was the savior of the movie making it at least amusing to watch. Not nearly as good as you expect from someone like Alfred Hitchcock, but it's got it's charms.

The weird haunted house intro is really good, but as the plot rears its head things get pretty dull. Quite beautiful throughout, though.

The first thing I noticed about this film is the fact that you can easily tell that this was based on a stage play by the way everything is shot, framed and acted. It's not too Hitchcock like but I still found this to be quite a fun fast paced little film.

Lots of interesting things both good and bad about this film, being an early Hitchcock, the lighting, the use of a train set for the finale, the British class structure defining the way the characters interact, touches of suspense and humour.
