Scandalously sophomoric and offensively pointless. 'Epidemic' remains Trier's worst, I'd say, but this takes second place without a doubt. Why do I keep watching the guy's films because of one great tv series made 20 years ago?

A worthy conclusion to Von Trier's spellbinding foray into the realm of female eroticism, decidedly confrontational while remaining curiously enigmatic in providing answers to Joe's incredible life story. I could discuss the rather awful ending for the sake of constructive criticism, but it's best not to talk about...AAH VON TRIER, YOU SON OF A (inaudible)

It started off so well. Building on Part I's momentum to take a darker, but evenly interesting path down the darkest suburbs of society. Substantially, it was an interesting experience. Von Trier's alter ego, Stellan Skarsgard, drew some fascinating and insightful conclusions. Alas, the last 30 seconds ruined it, with an ending that made no sense at all and broke with the entire set-up of the 4-hour-film. A shame.

I really detested the huge load of Sado-masochistic torture and punishment that seemed to never end. It was depressing and sick. Nearly all of the enthusiasm I had after watching Volume 1 was almost completely extinguished by that sad load of sick garbage. Thankfully that changed at about halfway in, got slightly better. But then we got a piss poor finish with a disappointing and stupid scene followed by another prolonged black screen. Barely worthwhile and WTF!

After the surprisingly self-reflexive work of Part 1, here we get the less desirable elements of von Trier's work - long scenes of misogyny, a contempt for his audience, contrived scenes of sadism, and several long speeches which seem to just act as an outlet for his utterly ridiculous views on race and sexism. Pack it in mate.

The ending is forced and stupid and forced. It's like Lars von Trier suddenly realizes that he is Lars von Trier and has to do a Lars-von-Trier-Ending. But, it still doesn't make me forget all those bright moments, those funny glimpses at human behavior with really smart thoughts (No, I don't care thats it's so didactic. And I don't care that it's own irony about being so didactic is pretty lame) on feminism, church, parentship and - espacially - pedophile.

The second half of this is even more sluggish and meandering than the first, with less Stacy Martin, so points off for that. Also Von Trier ends his epic statement with a bad punchline, which makes the whole thing even more insulting. That he tries to counteract all the latent misogyny with a half-hearted, simplistic "feminist" message comes across as more than slightly bizarre and maybe desperate.

Vol II proceeds greatly. But then it trips and falls badly in the bushes. The last hour is incredibly dissapointing. it's like AI took over - with plots? And actor-changes? And the introduction of a stupid GUN? And explaining the movie vaguely wrong in a 'revealing dialogue'? Suddenly we're watching a 'literairy thriller'. If you want my advice: watch volume 1 and watch volume 2, and hit STOP when Dafoe opens that door.

A sarcastic epic of female sexuality: THE real cunt-aware and cunt-loving feminist demanding for her whole life nothing but the right to desire. Such a total shame that this film even has (or had to have) a cut version, even though the editing didn’t seem to have done as devastating a damage as in the cases of some other films (like Kenneth Lonergan's MARGARET).

Unlike its predecessor, Nymphomaniac: Vol. II does not dissect human sexuality. Instead, this sequel expresses it. We no longer become an observer of Joe's past, but rather, a part of it, and while this works for a majority of the film, it also causes the narrative to fracture in the second half. This is because of the movie's curiously poor ability to tell its own strong story. The ending makes up for its flaws quite a bit, but for me it still wasn't enough for overall redemption.

I waited a long time to review this second part, mainly because I wanted to forget about this movie. I was sorely disappointed with the conclusion of this film. It was one of the most ham-fisted endings I've seen in a while. If the sex in this film doesn't offend you then the conclusion will. I still think everyone involved did a fine job acting and even von Trier's artistic shots rang true, I just probably won't watch either part of this film again...

Lars von Trier should be arrested for using the cinema for personal matters. This film - i'm speaking of both the volumes - is about Von Trier, Von Trier's films, even Von Trier controversies with press; often the woman's story feels like an excuse. I always take your parts Lars, but sometimes it's too much. Beside this, the movie it's a dialectic between two positions: "whats wrong with her?" and "well, it's her nature, her identity". But it's hard to keep it interesting for 4/6 hours.

Liked this better than the first volume, but I think that's because I finally began to understand a lot more of von Trier's intentions with the film. Also, what's on the screen is more disturbing than the contents of volume I and thus, inherently more interesting to witness, but I think it really hits its stride when von Trier is able to find a weird amount of beauty in the mad and the depraved. The spoon scene is perhaps the best example.

(..CONT'D FROM VOL 1) DIRECTOR'S CUT: Scattered somewhere within the almost 6 hours running time, is a 2 to 3 hours thought provoking masterpiece, but there is also quite a bit of uneventful/poorly written/misjudged experimental bits, that should have been left on the edit room floor (The juvenile coda was particular hard to swallow - no pun intended) Still, Triers movies, the good ones, have a quite unique ability to stay with you long after they're over, and this is no exception.

(for undivided cut) the most comprehensive example of lars' self-mythologising yet, overtly referencing all his other films. he openly hates himself just enough to get away with the hypocrisy of having a paternalistic male audience-surrogate intellectualise everything for us. the film's rootlessness mirrors joe's promiscuity, using up a subject before pinging to another. the triteness of the sex stuff may be a base for reconfiguring patriarchal "female sexual awakening" narrative archetypes.

Nymph()maniac: Volume II is a disappointing conclusion to what started as an idea with limitless potential and creativity. It's repetitive and far colder than its predecessor. Its ending will draw both criticism and praise, and will be something worth discussing for a while, but the fact that it takes four hours to get there -- the final two, while not bad, are not as interesting as the first -- means not that many people are going to want to get there. Volume II isn't bad, but it's a letdown.

Not an enfant terrible, not someone whose motive is to shock, or to abuse his actresses, but a trickster and possibly a misanthrope, Lars von Trier is, above all, the filmmaker with the keenest sense of social and intellectual hypocrisy, here focused on sexuality and gender, rooted in what seems like a kind of existential grasp of life, mortality and meaninglessness. Some great speeches. Seems comprehensible as a refutation of the work of Michael Haneke. Director's cut is better. Good job Lars.

All the good and bad points from the first volume are evident here as well, so this is pretty much more of the same. This could've been a concise single film if von Trier had some restraint, and this story could've benefited from it. Instead, this concluding part finishes this four-hour investment with some flimsy (anti-)feminist discussions, which only would've been interesting to see in a porn film.

Bleaker, less playful and ultimately less imaginative than Vol. 1, the second part of Trier's project still has plenty of humor, sharpness and intrigue to offer. It's just that, more often than not, Trier seems to be shooting for a 'shocking for the sake of being shocking' kind of cinema, a practice he had gracefully avoided in the first chapter. As a result, challenging and technically excellent as the film may be, it can't help but come as a mild let down.

Trier is always man for a good show, whether you like him or not. Audience better ready themselves for one hell of a trip around the darkest and brightest corners of human sexuality. It is somehow spellbinding with its many references and provocations which at the same time praise and ridicule art, politics, religion, human intellect, as well as you and me as audience. Witty and furtively funny. Triers films are defiantly always and experience, and this on is too. I think i like it...

LvT, the man who's made multiple films that overstay their welcome at 2 hours, just made a 325-minute film that rightfully earns its length. Across eight chapters, he reaches across the furthest ends of the arts and harnesses metaphors both familiar (Tarkovsky everywhere, the hilarious Antichrist fake-out) and left-field (Zeno's paradox??) to muse on sexuality, humanity, and everything in between. Finally a LvT project that lands on the right side of the pretention/stupidity boundary.

One of the worst endings to a good film. It's lucky the rest of Volume 2 posed such interesting dualities and philosophies to chew on that the complete betrayal of ambiguity into a flat-line, lazy nihilism doesn't override this fascinating experience. The pacing is slowed down compared to Volume 1, but this isn't stretched thin so much as it transforms into a tense, mesmerizing experience suitable for the increased focused on internal conflict, hypocrisies, and greater choices with sacrifices.

The story gets really random at this point, (spoiler) she becomes a thug, really? The bleakness of the first part was mixed with lots of humor, there's less of fun here, just lots of pain. Vol 2 is definitely where the darkness lies. I felt the narrative showed a lot more of the suffering of addiction. As others have pointed out, a good 50% of this 2 part tale could have been left on the cutting room floor. That is what makes this sort of a challenge to rank. The great parts were great but there are entire segments that were highly unnecessary, like from Willem Dafoe until the end. And that ending? Wtf was that? As if von Trier thought, "Oh shit, I forgot to include a rape!"

While volume 2 does not slog through uninteresting "chapters" nearly as much as volume 1, it still has a kind of patronizing, self-aggrandizing tone to it. Who but the most pompous of directors would re-create a scene from his magnum opus (Antichirst), just to prove that he's making the same movie from different angles. To be fair, there are memorable scenes here and there, but nothing is ever learned. And even if there was, he'd pound it over your head with over-explicit exposition.

Looks like the weight of the movie is in Vol II which is very rough and brutal. I still think that one voice telling the story and drawing parallels would have been better than discussion between random people that often feels forced and unnatural. Although at the end it proves it's point. It's very sad and disturbing story about addiction and the path it makes you choose where nothing else matters and no one can be trusted.

A textbook example of how to ruin a good momentum, how to destroy any characters built-up so far and how to disregard the first half's pace and theme completely. Very inconsistent editing, worse than in the first volume, and doesn't follow the path of the first film. Disappointing. No point talking about the ending. I'm reviewing both parts as one. Previous von Trier films affected me quite viscerally, but my reaction just wasn't as strong here. It did feel a bit too long. I don't think it was all necessary. The scenes with Skarsgård, while he was good & they were enjoyable, did take me out of the story Gainsbourg's character was telling a few too many times. Ultimately, I'm not sure it was as good as I wanted it to be. Still, it's a good exploration of sexuality, childhood, parenthood, gender & more.

Again, well acted, particularly Bell and Martin. As it wrapped I do feel the extremely long run time worked against it. Several scenes didn't resonate and if viewed with any time between the segments , lose their effect. All in all this isn't bad but the ending itself seemed cheap and to work against much of the rest of the film.

If there's one thing I can say about Lars von Trier, it's that he's consistently able to confound me. Here he presents one of his most accessible films, told in an episodic style that makes the movie's lengthy running time all but evaporate. His ideas here are interesting, if a bit preachy, and his style is captivating as always. And I won't say anything about the final few moments except that they left me stunned and perplexed. But I'd expect nothing less from Trier.

Comes together in a strong way. Overall a fairly unabashed look at fuck and the sway it has over society. I do like the theory that Skarsgard's character is a loose impression of a film critic, constantly rambling about whatever inane shit he is reminded of by Gainsbourg's performance of the cunt. LaBeouf should have been replaced by Mads Mikkelsen.

Why there's two volumes of Nymphomaniac? To cut down the running length for sure. But there ought to be an another level reason. Volume I is a female part of the story, gentle, intelligent, harmonic. Then again volume II is a male part, rough, rude, unfinished. More straightforward and visually provocative. As one the frame story did not wrap up as good as it should. And the lame ending was a conscious decision from the director.

There's a scene where Joe is told to rid her apartment of anything reminding her of sex. The scene is amusing, because Joe removes literally everything from her home except the bed, and then begins sucking on her fingers. Should she remove them, too? As I see it, Nymphomaniac attempts to expose, among other things, how unequipped and hypocritical society is when dealing with the desires of a woman who refuses to be domesticated and can't help but want more from life than is normally allowed.

A very strong conclusion up until the last half-hour, when the character of P (Mia Goth) proves rather weakly conceived, and the final moments are, if explicable, poorly set up. Still, there's a lot of gold here, from Jamie Bell's cold-blooded BDSM expert to a truly horrifying cameo by Jean-Marc Barr. Also worth mentioning: the fine cinematography, production design, and the continued excellent work from Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stellan Skarsgard. Overall, still a strong outing from von Trier.

Not quite the lurid porn epic many expected, although it undeniably has elements of that, this is really a 4-hour, intense character study masquerading as an ambitious art film. It has all the von Trier touches we expect (comic digressions, on-screen text, triptych-like split screen, overt symbolism, graphic sex and violence), and the performances are typically strong, but it has some awkward speechifying at times and some more focus would have done it some good. I 'm very biased on both movies. There's definite moments when von trier is saying something. A statement on two-faced morality and the socialised denial of a raw human sexuality that's basically omnipresent. Then there's these moments when it seems like he just tried how many dicks, balls and hairy pussies he could shove in there and get away with. Also, the dialog can be tiresome and forces specific interpretations that would've been best left to the viewer.

The story keeps you interested throught the film and the acting is also a pleasure to watch. In Trier's world no one is innocent, so the ending plays perfectly to the tone of the film. My only real complaints are the overly explanatory scenes and the slight repetitiveness of the movie. However, it is a fantastic film about a relevant subject. Sadly, it will probably be overlooked by many of the people who ought to see it.

A huge improvement on the mostly disastrous Vol 1. Better acted, paced and generally more interesting, despite veering off into crime drama for whatever reason. Lars is still content in expressing his opinions on cliched topics through his blunt dialogue, but some of it manages to hit a level of profundity this time. "Life is no way to treat an animal." (Kurt Vonnegut) von Trier's remake of "Anita: Swedish Nymphet" (right down to casting Stellan Skarsgård as the Nice Reliable Guy) is perhaps his most complex, ambitious script yet, with tons of juxtaposed ideas of sin, virtue, guilt, selfishness, sexual vs intellectual. It's hurt somewhat precisely by being so obviously an intellectual argument, but the ending... woah. Invites repeated viewings, and all of them will end with you feeling like an asshole.
