One of the Coens' best, a glorious mix of depression-era folk songs, Homer's Odyssey, and Preston Sturges-style comedy. It's jam-packed with plot development, with one "tight spot" after another. Clooney shows a remarkable ability to handle comedy, the music is enthralling, and Deakins' tempered cinematography is beautiful.

The ability of the Coens to operate so effortlessly in so many different styles never ceases to blow me away. This is some of the most fun I've ever had watching a movie, with a fantastic blend of comedy and American music and a clever reworking of the Odyssey to fall back on. I could listen to the soundtrack for days.

I don't know if it's already an adjective, but this is as Coen as can be. ... Funky dialogues, the extravaganza of weird characters, and subtile attention to detail. ... Clooney, Nelson, and Turturro also carried this movie to a higher level. Turturro especially is made for these kind of roles. ... Oh my, oh my... Another masterpiece that I'm glad that I haven't watched when I was younger as I would stick to the lack of meat in the story and miss all the stylistic genius and the more philosophical undercurrents. It has the typical Coen movie feel, but somehow also has something more than that, the dark comedy part of this (due to the Odyssey effect perhaps) is more "right on" and touching in a bizarre way. I think that Turturro is one of the most under-appreciated actors of all time.

A fantastical and uproariously funny (if very loose) adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey set in the rural South during the Great Depression. As expected from the Coens, everything is up to an absurdly high standard, but the soundtrack in particular is superb, full of soulful guitar and twangy harmonies. In a film packed with great performances, John Goodman's turn as a cyclops/Bible salesman stands out as a real highlight. An endlessly amusing cavalcade of goofy hillbillies and inbred yokels.

Distinctively Coen Brothers movie. Great atmosphere from the music and the tinting. The plot sort of meanders around at parts but you could jump into the movie at any time and it wouldn't feel repetitive. They had an actual magical negro. Fav scenes: (1) fisticuffs at Woolworth's and (2) the KKK scene.

The story and characters of this movie are so amazingly put together, there are so many small, hilarious bits that just work perfectly. The way the period is handled is out of this world and the main trio of actors do a phenomenal job. The story as a whole isn't the most gripping, and the digital coloring is distracting at times (however, 90% of the time is works flawlessly). This is a prime example of how damn talented the Coens are.

Personally, I could have done without the Odyssey references, the pacing is meandering, and the drama doesn't always work. But the characters, the acting, the music, and the cinematography are all top-notch. The comedy hits all the right notes, and this might be the Coen Brothers' most charming film, even if it's not their best. A lot of fun and enjoyment wrapped up in a Southern tale.

Wonderfully acted/crafted entry in the Coens' American mythos, putting Homer's Odyssey in the setting of Cool Hand Luke. But it's lightweight for its epic connotations and lacks the edge that I think marks the brothers' best work. It draws a lot of strength from music, invoking authentic gospel/delta blues to maximum toe-tapping effect. The deus ex gaia ending is a Coen staple - natural disasters that force spiritual reckoning from hubristic protagonists.

I have no reason to explain why but I really like the music in this. The trio of Clooney, Nelson and Turturro I found to be really funny. As normal with the Coen movies I have seen this is once again a strange story line, but it sorta works if you hang in there. I need to add the Soggy Bottom Boys to my I Like List, so I know when they will be performing in my area. And this review was sponsored by Dapper Dan.

Cheekily named after the unmade script in Sullivan's Travels, O Brother is all a bit of southern fun. Has a spiritual Forest Gump feel to it. Cinematographer got to bathe in the natural light, lazy droopy era willows and ceremonial burning crosses with glee. Stand out here is the turn of the century bluegrass, folk, gospel combination soundtrack. Care for some gopher?

Greek mythology meets the mythologies of 1930s America - the blues, Robert Johnson and the cross roads, the South, and many more upon it - its episodic narrative making more sense to me on this rewatch in presenting the film closer to ancient journey myths and how it's all the tangents which give them their quality. The result is a beautiful, humorous and playful view of the period, with one of the best soundtracks put together and with a well of depth to it between every great joke.

An audiovisual masterpiece, even taking into consideration the people we have putting this together. The music alone makes any reaction I can have be favorable. It does seem like they could have either done more with its Odyssey themes or scrapped it altogether; the narrative kind of runs out of steam with the best bits early on. I can't really say I laughed much either, it was more a constant appreciation until an unsatisfying conclusion.

The first time I saw this movie I couldn't even make it past 25 minutes before I got bored/annoyed and gave up. I gave it another shot because I've liked other Coen movies and I guess I must have been having a bad day that first time, because it's a really well done movie. The whole Odyssey reference works really well and, while not everything in the movie ties together perfectly, all the individual parts work well on their own.

I'm watching all the Coen movies and so far I love certain films and really don't like others. This one is one of their best imo. Whenever the two brothers and Clooney work together, you see the magic in the air. Great story, as mostly based on a biblical or mythical story and adapted by the Coens into their own, solid and imaginative story. At certain moments this film made me laugh and even feel happy!

it's a more of a love letter to the south and folk music, fashioned in the way of classic fables. it has that weird coen aroma, the quirkiness and the attention to detail, but this movie is more about the music and the soul of the south than the so-so plot it trots out. visually and aurally beautiful, somewhat lacking substance. like the south, i guess.

What a heartfelt compilation of aged folk tales! A Homeric journey from a rendezvous with Robert Johnson at them soul-sellin' Crossroads, to a brief run-in with the one man chain gang Babyface Nelson. It's a sort of a love affair with bluegrass. I have to admit, this film relies on it's poignant longing for the bittersweet countryside blues, but overall it has a wide variety of scenes and situations that are filled with farcical, satirical, and mesmerizing accounts.

Pure class from the Coen's again. This was a really important film for George Clooney, as it really set him apart from his daytime TV roots and gave him a lot of credibility. And to be fair it is easy to see why, he is excellent. A great use of music, a brilliant script and several quality performances mean this is pretty much as good as any comedy the Coen's have produced. Recommended.

I could run my mouth for years about why this is one of my favorite films of all time. The soundtrack, is simply, welp, awesome. All of the characters are amazing, and I don't just mean the main ones. Even people with bit parts brought their A game to this movie. I love the time period, I love how the three main characters are so varied in their personalities, I love it all. This movie was consistant enough in portraying the time period to really suck you in. Perfect. =D

Easily one of the funnest movies I have seen to date. 3 guys breaking out of the line to pursue the treasure while running into a lot of little misadventures along the ways was really fun. They meet a bunch of characters and have a little story arc with each one fitting into the overall narrative. Music and score was beautifully done and the characters all felt genuine. A lot of memorable lines as well. I love this movie, I highly recommend for slow and easy watch.

This movie…. This movie is incredible. It's bonkers, but it's so well-made. The cinematography is done by the same guy that was DP for 1917 and Skyfall. The story is a loose adaptation of Homers Odyssey. The music from beginning to end is amazing. Pretty awesome all around!

Didn't really get this one. I didn't find it funny and it's definitely my least favorite Coen brothers' movie that I've seen so far. I did really enjoy the music, but that was the best part for me. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I was more familiar with The Odyssey. Since I'm not, a lot of the references and characters didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I almost fell asleep at one point and wasn't really fighting to stay awake, which told me I wasn't that into it.

A rare movie that I really do not have an opinion on. I debated giving it the most "meh" score possible (75), but bumped it up one point for the music. It wasn't bad...but I can't say I enjoyed it on any level either. I thought that it finally hit some kind of a stride starting with the KKK scene, and that vibe carried through to the ending for me. Problem being, that was only about 20% of the movie. Everything that led up to the final scenes wasn't very interesting or humorous to me.

An infectious and wonderful old-timey soundtrack accompanies this highly enjoyable 1930s-set adventure-comedy, full of hilarious mishaps, well-crafted and witty dialogue, and a diverse set of memorable characters that range from charming to deadly. You never stop rooting for the three chain-gang escapees (played wonderfully by Clooney, Nelson, and Turturro) as they stumble towards a satisfying happy ending. Lots of memorable scenes in what is one of my personal favourites.

Certainly inferior to most of the Coens' other work, this whacky transposition of Homer's Odyssey in America of the early 20th century feels like a bunch of good ideas all thrown together in a messy whole that, however, remains consistently entertaining until the way-too-symbolic ending. The result is disjointed and uneven but, nevertheless, fun to watch and full of the brothers' trademark weirdness. Also, kudos to Roger Deakins for the stunning cinematohraphy.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? will be forever linked in my mind with my first job at Blockbuster Video. I listened to these songs so many times but they never got old. The music in this movie is something that can't be separated from the film. Every moment of music in this film is pure bliss. Mix that with a great script, Coen Brothers dark comedy, and one of the strongest casts that has ever been assembled in a movie and you will see why this movie is a classic.

There's a lot to like here, but the story is rather scattershot. Everything on the technical side is well crafted, the acting is good, and I liked a lot of the dialogue. I'm just not sure it really comes together as a whole cohesive movie. The problem is it's caught in some weird middle ground where it tries to be both an adaptation, and something wholly original. IMO the Coens have enough style that they could have made this work without the Homer's Odyssey esque set pieces.
