Jody Hill parodies the lovable underdog story creating a character, in Ronnie Barnhardt, that initially tricks the audience into rooting for his dreams of glory only to be horrified by the reveals of his true character, and the lengths he will go to in order to prove his worth. You will laugh, but hopefully at the satire in this movie and not because you agree with ANYTHING Ronnie does. When Barnhardt nears the completion of his underdog arc you actually find that you pray he does not succeed.

Punch-Drunk Love sans the magical realism and plus a few gallons of bile. In Ronnie, Hill and Rogen reveal the latent sociopathy behind the comedic man-child trope. The movie's final twenty minutes are awe-inspiringly perverse. Sticky stuff, this.

There's a moment in the middle of this movie when a character walks ashamed out of a room, saying "I thought this would be funny, but it's really sad." It's a nice little moment that epitomizes the problem with this movie: the balance between humor and pathos is in a constant, uncomfortable balance that doesn't quite work in the end. The film tries to make the protagonist likable by candidly revealing his many, many flaws, but it doesn't give us enough to like about him.

A few laughs but overall pretty bad. The writing is so lazy. I mean there is a scene that lasts for like 2 minutes where all that is said is "fuck you" over and over. Mexican with a lisp? Come on, now you are really getting lazy. Rogen, who I typically enjoy watching, just seems to be trying too hard here. Ultimately pointless and Jody Hill blows.

If you see one movie about a mall-cop this year... Hill brings the same balance of absurd humour and genuine emotion that drives his series, 'Eastbound & Down', and is quickly establishing himself as a premiere name in comedy. But the movie is more than just funny, it's an intensely dark character study, like Taxi Driver played for laughs. My appreciation of the film grows and grows retrospectively. Ronnie's a lovable psycho and Rogen is terrific playing against type. The violence is hysterical.

There's a scene in "Observe and Report" where a detective hides in a closet while Ray Liotta's character shares some bad news with Seth Rogen. However, after awhile, the detective steps out and explains that while he had hoped to witness something humorous from the exchange, the conversation left him feeling sad. He then exits the room. By the end, I've found that I identified with this character the most.

Jody Hill's strong suit seems to be the 'oblivious, self-centered asshole protagonist' concept. It works pretty well here, though the constant bouncing around between comedy, drama and some dark, dark shit takes some getting used to. Initially I felt Rogen wasn't the best actor for this type of role, though he grew on me just like that fungus I picked up from that meteorite sample.

Resembles One Hour Photo depicting psyhotic personas. I'm not sure why it fails, perhaps laying the story with dude films scheme and turning it around was not that good an idea. At least it managed not to be over dramatic and settling for a bitter tone. Sucky ending notice.

Director/writer Jody Hill once again presents a comedy centered around a loser protagonist with some serious issues. The dark humor in the film is certainly hard to swallow at times, making you laugh and simultaneously delivering a punch to the gut. Seth Rogen, in particular, gives an excellent performance as a seriously disturbed man who you also can't help feeling a little sorry for due to his internal turmoil. Like any great comedy, Observe and Report has much to say about real life.

Whilst the humour is hit and miss (some is genuinely hysterical, and generally the more shocking the better here) there's a very real, deep cutting undercurrent here that works really well. I thought that it could have been emphasised a little more, but for what it is it was unnerving at times. The delusions of grandeur theme is explored adequately. Without giving anything away, the ending was what I assumed it would be, but for some reason I think that something darker would work even better.

As a comedy it often succeeds in providing strings of funny moments, but the whole film just feels like that--moments. It's never coherent in style or tone, the story is often confusing. I'm not giving it a recommendation even though it does offer laughs, but the negatives outweigh the positives.

Don't go into this looking for a comedy; it's a dark, bleak, spiraling character piece ala Taxi Driver that has some solid jokes thrown in. Though the humor is few and far between, the absurdity and intensity of Rogen's character while he plays one of the biggest assholes on screen creates a good bit of funny. An uneven piece for sure, except that almost all of the characters are pretty despicable.

Beneath the oily veneer of malevolence, this movie is actually in many ways optimistic and good spirited. The protagonist don't exist merely for us to laugh at his lowered ambitions and failed dreams, but instead inspires with his dangerously obsessed optimism and devotion to a lifestyle most would call "failure". There's great satire here and moments that are wrong in ways that make the audience's confused reaction half the punchline, but I think the core is the upbeat (if delusional) tone.

"Observe and Report" is too dark and overly brutal. I can't quite comprehend why movies like this and "Step Brothers" think that an onslaught of F-bombs, male nudity and a beat-down on young kids is hilarious. Let's set the record straight: it isn't. You'd think a more mature approach to "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" would be funny, but no; both films wreak to high heavens. At least "Blart" contains some human decency. Seth Rogen's film is uncomfortably twisted and sad.

Normally I'm a fan of dark comedies but at times this was too dark even for me. It will have some parts that will make you laugh but overall the comedy in it is pretty mediocre. You could argue that it's more of a character study type of film but it's pretty mediocre in that stance too. It's a movie that many will hate, Rogan loyalists will defend and few will actually really enjoy fully. I was not one of the few.

I love cop movies, and wanted to love this one. It's got a fun cast, a good premise, an excellent soundtrack, and a few really cracking moments. The bad-part-of-town scene alone is almost worth the price of admission. It never really congeals, though, because it hops around from one subplot to another and one comic style to another with little regard for overall continuity. It's a better and more promising film than The Foot Fist Way, though, and I found the main character more interesting.

Someone described it to me as "If Travis Bickle was a mall cop". I can't say that I'd agree with that, and I expected the movie to be much darker than it was because of that recommendation. For the most part, the film plods along, and you don't really get the climax that you want. The film isn't a complete loss, however. Rogen isn't bad at all, and Jody Hill shows himself as a very capable writer/director. It's worth a viewing.

Some people can make criminal behavior funny (the makers of Arrested Development&Family Guy come to mind) but creator Jody Hill sure can't, unless of course you're the type of person who thinks fat asian twin nerds and a Mexican with a lisp are, in and of themselves, hysterical. Like the 1 guy in the group who doesn't know how to insult u in a clever way but just goes 2 far, Hill does exactly that REPEATEDLY. wrongly accused of pulling punches by some, this indescribably fascinating revisionist rogencom is a razor pressed down just enough to tickle and hurt at the same time, far more unsettling, deconstructive and revelatory in walking the line between lighthearted manchild lewdness and horrifying pathology than morphing into an exclusively serious character study would allow.

Observe and Report is an absolute riot among the comedy heavyweights and giants of the genre. I was also pleasantly exhilarated to find out that while it contains a wide assortment of gags and huge laughs that it's also a intriguing, exalting and magnificent yet dark buddy cop display. Although it helms obvious similarities to an earlier film of this year (Paul Blart), this is a more mature and arguably outstanding first-rate comedy that offers more than a few chuckles.

The one thing I kept hearing over and over about this movie is "don't expect a comedy, it's more like Taxi Driver". The truth is it's somewhere in between, which strikes a very unusual tone. I kind of liked seeing something with such an odd balance to it. Having said that, I didn't like much else about it. As a twisted character study it almost works, as a black comedy it almost works, but never really seems to hit home on any level. It's just... unpleasant, but with a few laughs.

Hell of a remake. This obscenely underrated black-comedy manages to out "Taxi Driver" TD. An even bleaker affirmation, O&R refreshes its cynical take on sanity & heroic violence in a modern society that shrugs & rolls with the (blood) flow. Where TD's oft-overlooked comedy is wonderfully straight, O&R's overt style isn't some lazy gong added. Punchlines serve to expound & validate our hero as much as the society around him that ultimately wakes up, takes notice... and gives the man a high-five!

It almost feels like this was written as a comedic version of Taxi Driver, which is a great idea. But then it's like the filmmakers forgot what is was about somewhere along the way and tried to turn their protagonist into a hero. But this really could have been solid with just a few tweaks. Instead it was mostly a mess, admittedly with several really funny moments.

It has a few moments of good comedy but for the most part feels like a bad drama that was lazily turned into a comedy. Most of the jokes are one note and overlong and none of the characters evoke even an ounce of sympathy. As a drama there's too much nonsensical stupidity and a warped viewpoint. It's a dark film only in that bad things happen and characters are flawed, but none of that is used in any meaningful way.

I enjoyed watching National Security, but this was a shit-ton funnier. Seth Rogen is a man who gives fat dudes like me hooe for what can be accomplished, including nabbing cute girls. The movie starts off a bit slow after the opening sequence but then picks up and laughs start coming. Some really good one liners I will not spoil here. Rogen also got the bi-polar thing down to a T. I give it props for Ray Liotta, and the fact that it out-Blart'ed "Paul Blart" - good thing or bad? I got the feeling that Ronnie was being portrayed and written as, at the same time, some kind of super hero, and a bi-polar go-nowhere asshole. That's really not a combination that leads to effective characterization, outside of Donnie Darko. Quite unfortunate as it kills Rogan's momentum; his recent roles (Z&M, Funny People, Superbad) have been gold. Clearly marks the end of Anna Faris' career.

I had to watch this because I love Rogen, but even he couldn't save it. I don't remember laughing once. Only for when you have time to kill and absolutely nothing else to watch. The bloopers in the DVD were killer though.

A very funny film boosted by a hilarious turn by Faris and a heartbreaking performance by Weston turns into an uncomfortable, unfunny, and unforgivably immoral tale about halfway through.

People have been WAY too kind to this film. It's totally forgettable. I didn't buy Rogen as this character for a second, and I feel like I've seen this kind of story before. Acting: bad. Writing: bad. I went in with low expectations, and I was disappointed. I really don't understand the love. Perhaps people are giving it a pass because of its unexpected ending, which I found to be the best (and funniest) part of the film. Not worth sitting through the movie though.

Violence in the unimaginatively titled Observe and Report is loud and blunt -- making it the ugliest, most hate-filled comedy since Borat.
