The story, while based on true events, is very much in the Inspirational Hollywood Movie mold, but the strong acting and steady direction keep things from ever getting TOO cheesy. [insert obligatory "October Sky is an anagram for Rocket Boys" trivia here]

I have come to the conclusion that I am the only person who has ever read this book. The book is a very good memoir, full of excitement and drama and emotion. The movie conveys much of the spirit of the book, but falls a little flat in some areas. This is a good film and worth your time.

Smart, sometimes funny, and had a great story from the start, October Sky is not only a lesson to father's and son's but also inspirational and well acted.

An inspiring story of young teens determined to build a rocket. It is slow at some points however the acting by this group of promising young men keeps the plot alive. Inspiring to all ages.

Underrated family drama with sweet humor and a surprisingly deep and nuanced family dynamic with the father/son characters. Chris Cooper is a stand-out as the father, and Gyllenhaal is his wide-eyed best as the son. The only sour note in this film is the actress playing the mother who is just DREADFUL.

I could tell you that this was Joe Johnston's best film so far, but then where would we be? It's another one of them 'inspirational pictures', but it's a well acted and refreshingly muted one of the kind. This film is sort of like the neighbour's daughter: She may look too ordinary to keep you really interested, but when you're hung over and home alone, you know she'll do nicely for a lazy wank.

Alright, we get it. Teenage Jake Gyllenhaal likes science. He likes rocket science. He likes metaphysics. He likes bubble science. He's the Real Genius of our generation spanning several films.

It's outrageously emotionally manipulative and heavy-handed but I have to admit it mostly worked. I saw it when I was a good bit younger and damn if I didn't find it inspirational. Chris Cooper is the freakin' mayor of badassery.

Unlikely subject matter, no big stars, few special effects and no deep message - so what makes this such a great movie? Maybe it's just that difference. That "Monday evening nothing on the TV and it's raining" problem just got solved. Touching, well acted, funny in parts and just downright entertaining. One that slipped through the net unseen - mores the pity.

Heavy handed? You bet, but forgivable somehow. Everyone is comitted to making the show work, & it gets enough interaction just right. The added plus of capturing the imagination, & being a "true" story puts the movie on firm ground.

It's a pretty conventional story, but a well-written, well-acted, and well-told version of one. It tells the story of a group of boys looking for a way to escape from a doomed life in the coal mines with just the right touch, and without ever becoming too heavy-handed.

Not even Chris Cooper could save this one. I figured it was going to be a bit overly sentimental, and even a bit trite. What I didn't expect was how lazy it was going to be, or how bland. Oh well.

It is certainly not without its fair share of cheese and common Hollywood traps but it is effective. There are a handful of moments where this transcends all those standard trappings. It's helped along by Laura Dern and a solid performance from a young Jake Gyllenhaal. It's one I've seen many times and I still keep coming back.

Most successful when communicating the power of a love of learning and education, largely thanks to the delicate work of Dern and Gyllenhaal & Co.; unfortunately the father-son relationship is overplayed and overly familiar from other films; Cooper does good work, but he's saddled with a one-note semi-villain who overly dominates the second half and drags things down. But there's always something inherently moving and exciting about any film that engages with the awe and wonder of space travel.

I always love rewatching this movie. Overall, the story is fairly simple, but it has a lot of heart, and Jake Gyllenhaal is great in it. Plus it brings back memories of seeing this as a kid who was already obsessed with rockets after Apollo 13, and I ended up building my own model rocket after seeing this movie too, so it's a nice reminder of that time.

We have all seen this story before, but rarely has it been executed this well. It got my tear ducts welling up a few times, and the father/son dynamic is one of the best in movie history. An underseen gem.
