Based off the Michael Jackson hit, Man in the Mirror, Oculus explores how the King of Pop ate a golden retriever and terrorized a former starship pilot. Props to the filmmakers on the attempt to introduce a combination of critical thinking and Macintosh home computer products to replace the tired 'clueless/helpless victim' cliches...that is until the victims forget to think critically or use their Macintosh home computer products, resulting in the same tired chaos we're used to in our horror.

Oculus plays with perception and tricks both the viewer and protagonists in fun/mean ways. This alone gives it an edge over the generic gore-jumpscare competition. It's not really mindblowing or anything, but there's a decent buildup and I enjoyed the ending. The only drawback for me is that 'evil mirrors' aren't scary since I have a curse or something that always lets me see this weird, hairy humanoid shape in every reflective surface. His eyes... He looks so.. dead inside. Poor trapped spirit.

You remember that Busta Rhymes song, "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See?" Looking at this poster, I think I finally get that. I rolled my eyes a few times while watching this despite appreciating the cleverness of the setup. Eventually, there was too much reliance on the same horror tropes they had stepped away from. Then I went to bed and realized my phone charger was in the basement. Damn it if that wasn't a long dark walk down there.

It's like a 1408 that works, with a haunted mirror replacing the hotel room. The dread is ever-present and rarely relies on cheap jump scares. Instead, it plays with your mind just like the mirror plays with the minds of the protagonists. One of the better horror films I've seen in a while, even if it occasionally threatens to become disconnected from reality.

It's a unique enough horror flick, of the can't-tell-what's-real-and-what's-not kind. If you're looking for killcounts and gore, maybe take a pass. But you like your horror from suspense, this has got you covered. It's going to take a good long while before I can watch a movie with Karen Gillian, and not wonder every time she runs into a pickle, why not just ask The Doctor for help?

This is one of those movies where, periodically, a scene will happen, then we cut to a minute earlier, before that scene happened, because it turns out that scene was just a hallucination! Whoaaooaooao! So you'll be stuck in a constant state of not being able to accept any scene as "real" and just get told at the end "turns out THIS is the REAL thing that happened!" They made a total waste of time out of an ok premise.

Oddly pretentious excuse for a pretty standard, terrible horror movie- The title itself is a dead give-away. As if calling your movie "Oculus" instead of, say "Douche Mirror" is going to make anyone forget about the shit acting/writing/directing and just break out the snifters of cognac and start qouting Alfred Jarry. The sad thing is that underneath all the bullshit there's a perfectly mediocre chiller struggling (albeit lazily) to get out.

I found this wildly underrated. It's an old-fashioned slow-burn ghost story with a great concept, surprisingly strong acting, and some really chilling scenes that don't rely on any cheap scares. It's not only very creepy, but it's the rare horror movie where you think "the cynic" of the story might actually have a point and isn't just being an idiot - such is this movie's ability to make you question what's real and what's not.

This isn't that bad by horror movie standards and has some decent scare set ups. However, typical horror movie logic is pervasive. What do you do when you're dealing with a powerful cursed artifact that has a long sordid past of really horrible shit? Why lock yourself in a house with only two people who have a shared bad history where nothing wrong could ever happen, no sirree. The two interspliced tales from two time periods coinciding into one event is mildly interesting.

Oculus was interesting in that it did a great job with its atmospheric tension, but could not seem to deliver a truly satisfying story. Mike Flanagan's direction and cinematography is definitely the best thing about the movie, as the cast somewhat slacks, and the premise is kind of wonky, but it can still be a fun watch with the right people.

Writer/Director Mike Flanagan again utilizes sibling dynamics and familial relationships (as he did in Absentia), and it's wonderful. He has a great skill for creating nuanced, complex relationships of which are the driving force of his films. Couple that with his somewhat fresh horror tales and you have an engaging result that stands above most other modern entries into the genre. Sometimes tense, often intriguing, very playful and not afraid to punish his characters, Oculus is highly recommen

A delightfully good horror movie. It's been way too long since I've seen anything like this. Has almost no stupid jumpscares, and focusses on creepy atmosphere and mystery instead. The story is really interesting, and the way it's presented is effective and will keeps you guessing. A few moments really made me cringe in the best possible way. Makes a fair amount out of the idea of the mirror as a screen or projector of remembered or fantasised traumatic events, but fails to follow through, becoming too preoccupied with playing out the mechanics of the narrative in an increasingly generic fashion. The film does not build to a wildly horrifying climax, nor does it resolve the ideas it has set up in a way that is either satisfying or effectively disconcerting, and hence it fails to capitalise on the audience's investment in the premise.

Oculus is a well-paced film that takes an interesting premise & bashes the audience over the head with how stupidly it all pans out. There's a lack of logical follow-through where the film sets up Gillan's plan, then systematically undermines it in a non-ironic way. Gillan, Sackhoff & the rest of the cast do a good job, but saving the film is beyond them. As the film crescendos, each note gets more out of tune, playing with what is reality to the point where I stopped caring. Disappointing!

So you can stop hoping to see any reflection of a mirror-free future for Kaylee and Tim. Oculus seems perversely, nihilistically determined not only to scare, but to vacuum up any shred of hope or sacrificial meaning into the dark supernatural void hidden behind the glass. Ultimately, Kaylie's elaborate plans and dogged determination are simply no match for an evil that's had hundreds of years to perfect its supernaturally murderous ways. (pluggedin.com)

Featuring great performances, with Gillan especially selling her role & Sackhoff and Cochrane shining as broken parents, it starts off pretty slow but manages to build into a very intense, very gripping slow-burn with a finale that, while maybe not the best, wraps up the story well enough. The dual-timeline structure is pulled off well, the visuals are well done, & the mirror itself feels as ominous & evil as any slasher villain. It won't be for everyone, but it's worth a look.

It tries to brain-fuck you up and succeeded at parts for me, although I didn't really understand the logic until the very end. And that's kinda bad. Also, it kinda got lost on me why for hell's sake you would go back into the house that traumatised you? Just to prove that there's something in that mirror? And then what? Oh well... But on the bright side Oculus is able to keep up the tension until the very end, which is rare for a horror movie. And I won't buy second-hand mirrors. Lesson learned.

I'd heard some positive things about this horror movie, but I was pretty disappointed. It really wasn't scary at all, and while it has a decent story, I just found myself bored. I think the producers really wanted another Insidious (2010), but this director doesn't even come close to the skill James Wan has as a horror director. I also thought Karen Gillan was kind of terrible in this. It really isn't that bad of a film, I guess - just mediocre in pretty much every way.

I found the concept of the spooky mirror and its effect on its victims' minds extremely fascinating. Borrowing some of the ideas of Solaris, they have managed to create a claustrophopic and nightmarish atmosphere, which was definitely the highlight of the film. The actors though... Oculus takes a creative path in telling the story of a haunted mirror and the lives of two of its' surviving victims out for revenge on the antique. The audience has two different timelines unfold before them as present day brother and sister seek to document the haunting while being forced to confront the events of their first encounter with the mirror more than a decade prior. The film generates its' tension through the mirror's malicious ability to manipulated the characters perceptions.

A horror movie that proves that you don't have to be vain to be scary. The film really doesn't mirror anything else, I've heard people mention 1408, but instead of a room it's a mirror keeping people hostage. I thought this movie wasn't entertaining all the way through, but it has some excellent moments and really messes with your mind. This isnt scary at all and the premise of an evil mirror sounds ridiculous...but the script is actually quite clever. You never really know whats happening or where you are in the timeline so you feel exatly the same as what the characters are feeling on screen. Some effective chills and creepy tension in this supernatural horror, in which Mike Flanagan avoids a lot of the genre clichés and manages to craft quite a unique film. The characters are not very likeable to start off with, but once they start becoming victims, the film takes off. The sound design is top notch and adds tons of atmosphere. The story, script and acting could all have been better but I found the overall atmosphere, scares and creativity added up to a satisfying horror experience.

The film's mirror concept is fantastic, it's just too bad that concept produced this film. The acting never lands the emotional punch the film desires, and instead, it's just a few kids caught in a haunted house. The mirror, and the continual flashbacks that merge into one, are nothing more than plot development, rather than a deeper look into our perceptions of ourselves or traumatic events.

The first hour's sorta standard, PG-13 haunted house/sins of the father-type stuff. But it EXPLODES in its last thirty minutes. No kidding; the last act is deliriously creative and entertaining, effortlessly sending us swirling back and forth through space and time again and again in what's one of the most thrilling, most rip-snorting horror climaxes in years. It left me breathless and a little giddy. So, I guess this is 2/3 underwhelming, 1/3 spectacular. But worth seeing for that 1/3.

Oculus makes an argument against abusive upbringing as a method to prepare children for the perceived ills of this world, showing that their experiences have a good chance of manifesting again in their future. The movie itself, despite the occasional suspenseful scene, is very generic and borrows heavily from various sources. The lapse into torture porn towards the end is particularly regrettable. As usual, the mixed timeline only indicates that nothing is actually happening. Also, fuck Apple.

This hasn't quite clawed its way into my favourites, but I think Oculus laid out the parameters it wanted to achieve and then proceeded to ace the shit out of all of them. I have rarely seen a horror film (and, indeed, a horror protagonist) with such well-laid out plans and such a clearly defined, well-performed execution. Wow, not bad at all. The premise sounds almost laughable, or at best like just another forgettable modern horror flick, but the film is surprisingly good at characterization and mood. The main story thread is a family slowly falling apart under the influence of our evil mirror, but the depiction of the psychological damage this causes is effective and oddly plausible. It helps that the scares are good and the atmosphere is suitably paranoid and claustrophobic. Just a rock solid horror film.

A fun horror movie for a dark night out in the middle of nowhere. The negative was that it relied too much on "tricks" to try explain the messy story of flashbacks and mind games. And I don't even know why the ghosts was there, expect all horror movies are expected to have those, as the real terror was the manipulation the mirror was doing to them personally.... however without trying too hard to challenge it's logic, it manages to entertain with it's 'making sense of whats going on' format.
