It felt a lot like John Dies at the End, in that I love the source material and kind of just accept that it can't be filmed better than it's written. Supposedly Michael Ende hated The Neverending Story film, but it does a perfect job of only biting off what it can cohesively show. Nowadays that book would be a bloated trilogy, or a crammed together mess like this. Everybody in this is likable though. There are worse ways to spend an evening, says married man with child. Much worse ways.

What if someone remade "The Frighteners" as the pilot for a quirky Indie detective comedy series? Answer: nothing great.

Quite chaotic. "Odd Thomas" couldn't decide if it wanted to be a fantasy, a crime show, a paranormal movie or a drama. All the bits and pieces were compelling, but together they made for a bit of a mess.

Plain entertainment. A fast paced action mystery with a paranormal background. Nothing better for a cool night movie with some pizza slices and a coke!

Odd Thomas was a quicky movie. I enjoyed much of the movie but some of the dialog wasn't believable. I did enjoy the overall story and many of the characters but the dialog made me cringe. The effects and action in the movie was good too. Overall Odd Thomas was a movie that I would recommend to fans of sci-fi movies but I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. I could even see myself watching it again to pick up on anything that I might have missed.

I like this actor (Anton Yelchin) who tragically died young. He was an interesting actor and this is a very unique and fun movie.

Turns out "Odd" is, like, his first name. That's what everybody calls him, anyway. This movie is way too damn quirky for its own good, is what I'm saying. Cheap, TV movie-ish, badly acted, disappointing. Sorry, Odd.

always love anton yelchin. had some good spooky moments. kept my interest the whole way through. the mystery itself comes together haphazardly, but i didn't mind.

Odd Thomas is definitely quirky. The film feels like a comic book adaptation of a superhero's origin story, with plenty of elements that we've seen before, but it still remains fresh, entertaining and fast-paced. That said, the acting isn't great and the special effect leave something to be desired, but improvement wouldn't necessarily raise enjoyment. Think of this film as part 'The Sixth Sense' or 'Dead Like Me' meets 'Scott Pilgrim', with a pinch of 'Spiderman'.

What's really odd is to find a movie right up my alley--I love supernatural movies, I love Dean Koontz, I love Anton Yelchin and Willem Defoe--but nothing clicked. I found it to be just a little boring.

Not terrible but just felt a little cheap, almost TV Pilot-ish? Could be worse and the cast was nice.

It has a couple flaws that hold it back from being outstanding. For one, the main character's constant voiceover narration ranges from inconsequential to intrusive. There also seems to be lots of effort taken to make every character "witty." Maybe the book is the same way, but it doesn't translate well to screen. Aside from that, the plot itself is not bad, nor are the special effects, for the budget they had.

Take the 'Odd Thomas' drinking challenge: take a swig every time he and his girlfriend share an awkward declaration of love, the film tries a little too hard to be witty, someone remarks on just how odd Odd Thomas is, or the film hits you with some heavy-handed exposition. Victory will result in you being the next ghost aided by Thomas himself. The target of your revenge should be Stephen Sommers, not myself.

There is nothing odd about loving a film like this. A paranormal detective story with some excellent action, wonderful CGI and actors that you'll love. Anton Yelchin is a new favorite of mine. Addison Timlin has been on my radar for a little bit but she's gorgeous and wonderful in this film. Willem Dafoe has a smaller role, but I still love him in this. The story keeps you hooked...

The quirkiness appealed to me, but the script came across overly contrived--too smart-sexy-cool to be believable. Creative idea.

Started really really well, then it went straight to hell but luckily it managed to pull it's way up at the end. All in all a decent Movie that could have been so much better.

This was a pretty great TV Pilot...Umm I mean movie. The whole thing plays out like a well made television movie / pilot episode. The story was fast paced and really fun, the acting was solid if not great. The best thing about the movie is that it leaves me wanting more and if I liked it this much I'm wondering how much more I'd like the novels.

Ultimately neither the protagonist, or the film, are sufficiently odd, or interesting. Nothing beyond what might appear in somewhat bland Young Adult fiction, perhaps.

Like someone else said, too quirky for its own good. Didn't like the annoying voice-over narration either. Never read the book, never been able to get through anything by Koontz. Only decided to watch this when I saw Willem Dafoe was in it, and it gets five extra points for his presence, because I love that creepy bastard.

The film tries way too hard to be quirky. It's also filled with bad dialogue delivered poorly. I read the book years ago -- it did a much better job with tone. Also, "Whee! We just got AfterEffects!" It felt like a TV pilot -- not sure I'd tune in for week 2.

Decent casting, and might have been bearable if the filmmakers had been LESS true to the novel this time, and cut 90 percent of Koontz's painful, cringe-worthy dialogue.

A well made movie for a smallish budget ($27mil), it has a bit of many styles; quirky, funny, fantasy, supernatural. The two young leads are good and play off each other well. The rest of the cast also do a fine job as well. There is a short scene with Timlin in her fine things that is memory burned.
