Old-fashioned symbolist surrealism with Oedipal undertones, a film inspired by an Odilon Redon charcoal painting... not all of Maddin's shorts are worth watching but this one is.

I've said it before but it bears repeating: no one makes movies like Guy Maddin. Few directors have such a distinctive stamp. Inspired by a Redon sketch, this brief, strange short takes us on an underwater train journey full of intrigue, betrayal, jealousy and other inexplicable goings-on. I always enjoy Maddin most in small doses, in fact I immediately went back and watched this one again. Not quite as stunning as The Heart of the World, but a really fine piece of work in the surrealist vein.

Strangely evocative but still rather obscure.
