It's fun to see Tanaka's ideas in a period piece, and to see a young Nakadai in a role wildly different than Hara-Kiri in the same year. When the focus is on Ogin, it's a tight ship and the themes shine. But its source material - a fanciful historical revisionism focusing on Rikyu - means it meanders into this narrative, and the Christian thread of the title frays as the film progresses. The last shot is quite the cultural rebuke: society denying female authenticity, death as the only response.
