Completely incomprehensible, but strangely compelling Godard experiment; strikingly photographed and invested with a startling soundtrack (Depardieu is also terrific under the circumstances). Moments of insight and success buried beneath the haphazard narrative style; while this is undoubtedly Godard's goal and purpose, it doesn't make the finished product any easier to decipher or indeed 'enjoy' in any conventional way.

Might be one of the most visually striking and beautiful films I've ever seen, and the sound design is amazing too. The film has this very dreamlike feel to it, and some of the things that the characters say rang very true to me. It could be even better on a rewatch where it will be easier to decipher and things will link together more, but even first time round this sort of stuff affects me on a very personal level.

Kind of on the fence about a lot of Godard's work from this period, where he sort of rabbit-holed into this obsessive intellectual esoterica. Visually arresting, and in general Godard is familiar with the medium, but this largely structural focus leads to a vision of beauty that, to me, lacks poetic spirit, and certainly lacks the energy and verve of earlier work. I hated the first ten minutes or so, but warmed up over time.

Although at least a few of the threads of the tapestry were able to be discerned (e.g., the bit about the lizard version being a reference to THE DEATH OF EMPEDOCLES), the meaning of the overall design was for this viewer fairly indecipherable.

Difficult to rate this. It’s largely incomprehensible, but strangely mesmerizing nonetheless. Above all it is beautiful shot, Godard does knows a thing or two about mis-en-scene.

Godard's visually most beautiful work and my second-favorite overall (better than Notre Musique or Forever Mozart which i also watched recently).
