Unusual and ahead of its time for a 30s movie, though somewhat depressing. A man working for an American oil company and China must choose between his loyalty to his company and his wife.

Corporate brainwash! Epic Warner Bros style with heavyweight actors and accomplished production values. Though it's largely forgotten today, perhaps by it's atypical story of business life in China,. The movie basically tells us to be loyal to our employer, no matter the sacrifice. Not really a moral relevant today. That makes the hardcore company people little more then caricatures. Don't really get under their skin beyond the corporate ideology. And that bring the unintentional comedy.
