Okasareta hakui

This was a really disturbing film that while not graphic kind of got under my skin. It feels like a play at times and makes good use of B&W as well as a few dashes of color. Some of the wrap up felt pretentious and lame. Its exploitative without being sleazy, not an easy thing to pull off. Weirdly enough it is based on a true story.

Undeniably exploitative, but I found it gripping and provocative. It succeeds first as an extremely effective horror movie, as we can't discern any rhyme or reason for what's happening to the women but somehow understand they are doomed. Slowly we are given glimpses into the mind of the perpetrator, and it's not a comfortable feeling. Arguably ends up sympathizing with the villain or trying to excuse his misogyny, but I don't think that's really what's going on.

There's nothing too provocative, really. A very, very soft and unimaginative BDSM pretending to be an art film. Its only merit is the short running time.
