I cringed through most of this film, and barely made it to the end. It fails as a satire because it's so heavy-handed, as a comedy because it's not funny, and as a drama because it's so cartoonish. An Seo-hyun is ok, but the English speaking cast either struggle noticeably with the terrible script, or ham it up something fierce, and Jake Gyllenhaal should be thoroughly ashamed of his ridiculous performance. Bong Joon-ho is capable of so much more than this juvenile fiasco.

Certainly an original movie which has some great cinematography, some thought-proving satire and a wonderful chemistry between Mija and Okja. It can be overly zany (especially Gyllenhaal who seems to be on another planet entirely) and the tone shifts can be drastic but as a Netflix product, you know that anything goes... and anything certainly went.

Okja is a bizarre movie, one that's part satire, part adventure film, but all oddness. It's a film about a giant genetically modified super-pig and the quest of a young girl to bring it home. But it's for adults and it's a criticism of the food industry. Somehow, it almost all works, and is entertaining, emotionally resonant, and thoughtful. It's a great movie.

As Bong Joon-ho's second foray into English language film (discounting the less utilized Korean parts), I had hoped he would have one upped himself, but "Okja" is a slight downgrade from "Snowpiercer". This one is a relatively fun little hodgepodge of fantasy, action, comedy, sci-fi, thriller. If it's not apparant from the trailers, it's not a movie strictly following conventional tropes from any one genre, and while it might be unique, it stops short of being great.

Probably the most successful movie at delivering a message on the absurdity of our food industries (while also having it's fun with activists. It's slightly like anime come to life, with over the top memorable characters intermixed with some action and humor. Also a pretty badass cast.

A vegan's wet dream. They hammer you over the head with anti meat propaganda by making the super pig exceptionally cute and clean with a high emotional IQ for an animal. Almost dog like. Plus they have it be raised as a pet by a young girl for 10 years, manipulating the audience into feeling bad for being omnivorous. Real life pigs are filthy animals. They sleep and root in shit. But bacon tastes good, pork chops taste good! Why is Tilda Swinton such a fucking weirdo in everything?

There's an interesting metaphor in that we're both supposed to cheer for, and believe in the world-feeding capacity of, what is very obviously a CGI creature. A pipe dream that can stand in either for naked cynical capitalism or tweenage belief in a fair utopian mountain paradise. Bong never lets the viewer relax in either narrative, shifting from pathos to slapstick as if to make a point. In the end, though, I still want both the cute pig and the tasty porkchop.

Part of me enjoyed Okja, and another part of me expects a ton more from a Netflix original. While, certainly its cast is more than interesting and actually quite good, its plot, while also interesting, never crosses into the good territory. A movie that is often incoherent, strange, and can't decide between a few drastically different tones, Okja is alright, but nothing to write home about.

No, Bong Joon-ho, there's no such thing as GE meat. In fact, if you're genuinely about animal rights you should be the first to embrace biotech efforts to grow cheaper, healthier vegetables and plant-based animal alternatives, instead of coat-tailing an ignorant anti-scientific fad that's an assault on eco-sustainability. In the GMO divide, it's Greenpeace that are lethal to animals, not Monsanto. Also, stop trying to brainwash children with caricature villains and garish emotional manipulation.

I watched most of this thinking it could have been more. Many scenes, sequences felt underdeveloped. Many storytelling solutions are just too simplistic, too lazy. I even felt the absence of crucial shots in some action sequences. Overall, this was a well intentioned and decent film. But -don't get angry with me for saying this- a name like Spielberg would direct the shit out of this script, and it would be a really touching, exciting film. Bong Joon-ho's film just misses it.

The villains are too easy and the heroes are too simple, which knocks it down a notch, but the wacked out satire is sharp enough to slit an innocent pig's throat and the action is inventive enough to entertain even the most diehard steak eating humanoid. For those that whine about its moralist bent: Whine all you want. Factory farming (and by extension, the meat/dairy industry) is repulsive and we should destroy it. Okja animates these concerns in an admirable and entertaining way. Cool movie.

The pacing is a bit off, especially at the start of the film and some characters were just too over-the-top and cringy (such as Gyllenhaal's character), but it picks up speed from the middle onwards and gets better. Cinematography is strong and so was Seo-hyun Ahn. The tone is a bit all over the place but it worked out okay at the end. Didn't feel like a long film because of this, despite the 2 hour running time. Worth seeing, the final act in particular is quite strong and emotionally resonant.

Joon-ho Bong reins in his habitual tone-shifting a bit and gives us something a little more restrained than usual, but makes the mistake of ramping up the loudness of the message. The emotional beats aren't there, despite (or rather because of) a cliched attempt at providing some. There's also some subtext about communication that never resolves into anything meaningful. Gyllenhaal plays his character as overtly irritating, a baffling decision that brings everything around him down.

OKJA is an embodiment of the ridiculous and the sublime, the type of film that's a touching story of indomitable friendship one moment, and a scattershot satire the next. The film tackles a variety of issues (corporate ethics, factory farming, animal activism) to mixed success, but its heart is truly in the relationship between a young Korean girl and her miraculous--and skillfully rendered--"superpig." Cut though all the competing agendas, and you'll find the movie's huge, irresistible heart.

A film that starts as a goofy, kid-friendly CG creature film and ends as a gruesome PETA PSA should not have the qualities that it does, which are solid cinematography and good acting, but it should also not take itself seriously, which is does to its detriment. No amounts of handsome Paul Dano or charismatic Korean children could lift this film above the strangeness of its concept, and its confusing tone infected every scene, from projectile poop to bizarre animal rape.

Okja (2017 - Netflix) What's the best pig movie since "Babe"? Easily, it's the new Netflix release, "Okja", a fairy tale with an ominous message. Rated MA-TV, this film is clearly not for young children, due to language and violence. I did not think it was possible for Jake Gyllenhaal to give a performance this horrible. considering every other movie I've ever seen him in, I'll assume the fault lies with the direction. there's also something deeply strange about a movie about corporate evil being exclusively on Netflix, but perhaps it's better -- fewer people will have to see it

The part where the movie tries to show Mikha's and Okja's friendship is very good. It's a moralistic movie that tries to impose a certain way of viewing the world. The movie intends to make the "bad guys" look stupid (caricatures), there's a deliberate intention of making a personal attack on the "bad guys" (creating a social image of those). Apparently this is Netflix's intention: to educate a certain morality upon the world. Suffering is a great way to create empathy towards a certain agenda.

Part of me really wants to rate this a lot lower because of its absurd sentimentality and forced social justice theme. Under a lesser director it would have certainly turned into a shitpile. Somehow Bong does just enough to knit together some very over the top elements and the absurd plotline into a decent film. Gyllenhaal turns up the camp factor to 10. Not enough good things can be said about child actor Seo-Hyun Ahn. Sadly some actors in this like Esposito and Yeun are wasted in this.

Yes there were a lot of massive tonal shifts, yes it bared quite a strong resemblance to what a live action Studio Ghibli film might look like, and the acting...well let's just say I had a hard time figuring out if this film was subtly brilliant or blatantly abysmal. I loved how violently the tones shift, one minute you are enthralled by a Blue's Brothers-esque absurd chase scene and moments later you are emotionally crushed. This happens fairly often throughout the movie and works exceptionally well. The CGI is incredibly impressive especially when Okja is interacting with Seo-Hyun Ahn (who was great). Even though the movies message is clear there is an absurdity to both sides (activists and corporatists) that elevates the film beyond propaganda.

act I is a nice, serene child-animal fantasy pitched somewhere between MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO and THE LAST GUARDIAN. alas it's about capitalism again, so the yanks arrive straight out of a below par SOUTH PARK ep, and although the creaking satire initially seems balanced, the cynicism turns toward the audience with some particularly aggressive third act hogocaust moralising. it's almost worth a rec for sheer nuttiness, but really it's a misguided clusterfuck and a redundant entry in bong's filmog.

It does make some very valid critiques of late capitalism, particularly in regards to Korean Consumerist Culture, but the power of it's polemic gets lost as, both narratively and tonally, it simply just goes way too over the top to be taken 100% seriously. Great cast and cinematography though.

Very enjoyable at the beginning... it does start to become trying after the genre switches for the nth time, from fantasy to drama to comedy to action to satire and back to drama. The cartoon-like characters and locations are appealing enough but eventually there are too many abrupt shifts in pace and setting. By the end, the emotional heart of the film has been battered and strained so much, only a hollow feeling is left. Above-average entertainment but flawed in many ways.

Engaging, endearing riff on E.T. gets mileage from Bong's off-kilter view of the world and characters he creates - keeping the viewer perpetually on-guard mixing sincerity and cynicism, and wildly different points of view, sometimes within the same scene. Cast is on fire, including Swinton (with great teeth again!), Gyllenhaal (in a mad performance evoking Jim Carrey) and Ahn, who provides the solemn heart of the film. Harrowing deneumont is a dramatic tone-shift from everything before it.

I was really blown away by this movie - it's a lot more dark and satirical than the sort of animal-buddy adventure romp I expected. I found all of the characters (Dano, Gyllenhaal, Swinton) to be layered and a delight to watch, and the emotional chemistry for Seo-Hyun Ahn and Okja felt genuine and cut deep. For a movie that very strongly conveys its message, I didn't find it heavy-handed at all, which I think is a testament to the cast and writing.

Oyuncuların tipleme karakterleri çok göze batıcıydı. Fakat Tilda!
